Miyamoto Confirms Star Fox in a Do or Die Situation

Star Fox is probably one of Nintendo’s best franchises, appealing as it does to every crowd- people who traditionally like Nintendo games, and people who don’t. Also, unlike Metroid, Star Fox has appeal and recognition amongst the mainstream and casual gaming audiences too. At GamingBolt, we love Star Fox, and find it to be equal to Nintendo’s top franchises. Consequently, we’re also eagerly awaiting the upcoming 3DS remake of the N64 era classic, Star Fox 64. Therefore, it hurts us that, in all likelihood, the Star Fox franchise is probably dead.

Speaking in an illuminating Iwata Asks discussion, Miyamoto admitted that the upcoming remake would make or break the future of the series.

“I told Dylan-san (Dylan Cuthbert, Star Fox co-creator) that if this game wasn’t interesting, I couldn’t make any more Star Fox games! I said, ‘If first-time players like this game, Star Fox will be reborn!’ That’s how much I’m counting on this one game!” he said

“So if there’s anyone out there who wants to look at the future, please play this! (laughs)”

Although there is an air of brevity to his words, it more or less confirms that the franchise, which has long been in hiatus (its 2007 DS installment notwithstanding), is on life support. Miyamoto has made it clear that unless the remake sells, the franchise will be swept under the carpet for good. Considering that the remake already bombed in Japan, it will have to do some serious numbers in the US and EU if it is to meet his expectations.

Star Fox 64 3D is a few weeks away from release.
