New No Man’s Sky Video Details the Making of the Game

Hello Games' Sean Murray discusses the process and inspiration behind No Man's Sky.

“Give everyone a spaceship. Start them all on a different planet. Give them a working, living, breathing universe that has planets with ecology, that has space stations and fleets of freighters and military and police and different races and all of them interacting, and let players loose and let them decide the game that they want to play, because that’s what’s interesting to me.”

That’s No Man’s Sky in the words of Hello Games’ Sean Murray. In a new video released today, Murray discussed the history of Hello Games and the Joe Danger series, the origin of No Man’s Sky, and how the team has approached building a game that is so large and ambitious and wholly unlike anything else on the market right now.

“It’s like a pitch from a child,” Murray said as he began describing the team’s vision for No Man’s Sky, and indeed, it does sound like one. Most of what was covered in this video is stuff we’ve heard already – procedural generation, unique planets, etc – but Murray also hinted at the game’s main goal, which is to reach the center of the galaxy. To do that, he said, you’ll need to plan and work with other players and upgrade your ship, weapons, and suit, among other things. Of course, the game continues beyond that, and there is a story and lore to the universe to kind of push you towards that goal, but Murray was quick to point out that you can play No Man’s Sky however you like.

It’s a must watch video for those interested in the game, and provides great insight into Hello Games’ vision for their universe. Now all we need to know is when we can get our hands on this thing.
