At their financial briefings meeting held recently, Nintendo preisdent Satoru Iwata revealed that of all the Nintendo 3DS users worldwide, about 72% of them were connected online worldwide. This staggering connection marks a 10% increase from 2011’s numbers, and is especially high in Japan and the United States. They’ve crossed the 80% mark already, with continents like Europe and Australia being comparatively lower.
Japanese users usually connect to the Nintendo eShop to view Nintendo Direct videos online, which is even more surprising by how it’s currently the most popular way to do this. It’s like they haven’t even heard of Youtube! Downloading games is significantly lower on the totem pole though, as downloaded versions of games accounts for 3-10% of total worldwide sales. This of course depends on the game in question, with the relative lack of advertising and marketing being blamed.
It’s still a very scary figure. How many PS Vita users can boast about being connected online worldwide? Well, not like their numbers compare to Nintendo’s at the end of the day but you get the point.
