Nintendo 3DS hits 5 million sales in Japan

Nintendo has just issued a press release in which they mentioned that the Nintendo 3DS has finally hit 5 million in Japan. It was a rocky start for the handheld but it really came into its own in the latter half of 2011.

The 3DS has sold almost 15 million units worldwide. The press release is in Japanese and my Chrome fails to translate the page, but there is a cool graph supplied by Nintendo which shows all the current systems except the Vita. I guess 500k sales isn’t significant enough for them.
