Nintendo 3DS Sells 20 Million Units in Japan, Splatoon Hits 1 Million

Nintendo's reign over Japan continues.

For a system that had a start as poor as it did, the Nintendo 3DS has really managed to turn itself around- till date, the system has sold over 55 million units worldwide, becoming the highest selling system of this generation, and it also boasts the most attractive library of games for this new batch of platforms so far. A constant stream of hardware revisions, aggressive pricing and bundles, as well as great games, has kept the 3DS the top dog so far.

In Japan, the 3DS has now managed to sell 20 million units over its lifetime as a result- this makes it one of the highest selling systems in Japan period, putting it ahead of other systems like the PS3, Wii, and PSP, and in the company of other systems like PS2, Nintendo DS, and Gameboy.

On the software side, Nintendo’s perennially hit third person shooter has managed to sell 1 million copies at retail in Japan- for a brand new IP on a dead console with a disengaged audience, from a company with no experience making shooters or online centric games, Splatoon’s success has not ceased to amaze us yet.

Here’s to many millions more, as well as a sequel on the NX.
