Nintendo announces Q1 2013 results: 3DS sells 1.86 million, posts $220 million loss

Nintendo has announced its Q1 2013 financial results and it’s not looking good. They have posted $220 million loss which was expected due to the high exchange rate.

The 3DS has sold 1.86 million; Wii has sold 700k units and the DS has dropped to 540k. It does not look like the Wii will reach 100 million anytime soon, and there’s no way the DS will catch the PS2 at this rate which has sold 155 million so far.

They have projected 18.5 million 3DS sales for this fiscal year. Nintendo has sold has sold 52 million 3DS software, including 7.39 million software for this quarter.

They are forecasting 73 million software sales for the fiscal year 2013.

“The profitability of the “Nintendo 3DS” hardware is improving, but the hardware has been in negative margin. Therefore, although the selling, general and administrative expenses decreased compared to the first quarter of the previous fiscal year, the result was an operating loss of 10.3 billion yen,” they revealed.

“Nintendo will release the “Wii U” system, the successor of “Wii,” mainly in Japan, the United States and Europe at the end of this calendar year, and propose a new play style of home entertainment with its unique controller
embedding a 6.2 inch touch screen.”
