This is one of the most out-of-the-left-field ideas I have ever seen. Nintendo today announced the Nintendo Labo, which is… well, it seems like a DIY cardboard/papercraft kit, that is going to work in tandem with the Nintendo Switch to create some really cool looking toy-like applications.
The Labo seems to leverage multiple ideas at once- the modularity of the Nintendo Switch, Nintendo’s game making prowess, and, uh, imagination. Applications seem to range from becoming a giant robot to fishing to playing the piano to more. Joycon tech such as HD Rumble and the IR camera is all being leveraged and utilized heavily for this. If this takes off, I can see it being huge for the kids and educational market.
I say if because the pricing is insane- we’re speaking of the Variety Kit being $69, and the Robot Kit being $99- you do get the game plus the full DIY kits in those prices, but still. On the other hand, I thought the Switch itself was overpriced, so what do I know, really.
Here, check it out for yourself. You can get it on April 20.
