Nintendo has gone ahead and trademarked “N64”, indicating that, much like the NES Classic Mini and the SNES Classic Mini, and N64 Classic Mini representing a miniaturized emulation box of their first 3D console may be incoming.
If an N64 Classic Mini exists, it is likely to have 15-20 games on it (though it is hard to know how Nintendo will wrangle getting them on the system at all, since a lot of the N64’s best games, such as Goldeneye, WWF, and the entire Rare catalog, are stuck in rights hell). It is unclear whether or not the N64 Classic Mini will support four controllers, or come with four controllers- four controller support was actually the reason the system was as successful as it was.
Even with all the problems highlighted above, we can probably expect some of the greatest games of all time on the system- Super Smash Bros., Mario Kart 64, F-Zero X, Super Mario 64, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask, Donkey Kong 64, Kirby 64, Diddy Kong Racing, Star Fox 64, Wave Race 64, Mario Party 2, Pokemon Snap, and Pilotwings are some of the titles we can hopefully expect from the system.
Now we wait for Nintendo to announce it, and we hope that it won’t be as woefully undersupplied as the NES Classic Mini and SNES Classic Mini were.
[Thank you Japanese Nintendo]
