Video game movies are cursed to always suck- but the curse actually has its roots all the way back in the Super Mario Bros. movie from 1993, which was so famously bad that everyone working on it disassociated themselves with it.
The definition of insanity is to try something again and again, expecting a different result each time- which is exactly what Nintendo is doing, because, according to a report by Dow Jones, Nintendo is close to finalizing a deal for a Super Mario movie with Illumination Entertainment, which works with Universal on the Minions and Despicable Me franchises.
If this report is true, it would tie in to Nintendo’s stated intent to leverage and license its IP as alternate avenues for its business; it also indicates that it would be an animated movie, which… maybe it will actually not suck this time?
I have no hope, personally. If you guys want something good that is Mario, play Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Mario+Rabbids: Kingdom Battle, or Super Mario Odyssey. They’re all out on the Switch.
