Nintendo Confirms the Wii U is 3D Capable

In spite of Nintendo’s repeated assertions to the contrary, head honcho Satoru Iwata has confirmed to Mercury News that the Wii U, its upcoming console, and successor to the Wii, will in fact be 3D enabled, fully capable of outputting images in stereoscopic 3D.

“If you are going to connect Wii U with a home TV capable of displaying 3D images, technologically, yes, it is going to be possible, but that’s not the area we are focusing on,” he said.

“When it comes to the home console, it depends upon the availability of 3D TV sets at home, which, unfortunately, is not expanding enough. And rather than pouring a lot of energy into that kind of area, with the Wii U we’d like to focus more on each Wii U owner being able to have an equal opportunity to enjoy it.”

So, it appears that like the Xbox 360, it will be fully capable of 3D gaming, but that this particular feature won’t get a push. Also like the Xbox 360.

If this system resembles the Xbox 360 in other ways too, then it could be the best Nintendo console in a very long time.
