Nintendo doesn’t want to copy Xbox Live or PSN – Iwata

Right decision.

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has revealed that the Wii U will utilize a different online network that is not emulated by the current standard service, Xbox Live.

He feels that they can provide a unique experience with Nintendo Network that is not found on any other console.

For now PSN and Xbox Live are networks that have millions of people playing on them, and Nintendo has brought a service called the Miiverse where a lot of people can come together and interact with each other. It has proven to be quite popular too.

“We have not thought that offering the same features that already exist within other online communities would be the best proposal for very experienced game players,” he told IGN.

“Nintendo has paid a great deal of attention to the dynamic of people playing video games together in the same room,” Iwata explained. “With Wii U, we thought about expanding this concept into separate rooms which are connected online. Miiverse is a network community dedicated to video games that represents a very unique game-dedicated social graph that has never existed before.”

He also apologized to people for the massive day 1 update which ended up bricking quite a few systems.

“Personally I think that users should be able to use all the functions of a console video game machine as soon as they open the box,” he said.

“So I feel very sorry for the fact that purchasers of Wii U have to experience a network update which takes such a long time, and that there are the services which were not available at the hardware’s launch.”
