Nintendo is Expanding its Game Development Division

The planned expansion will allow Nintendo to move more of its development in-house rather than relying on outsourcing.

Nintendo has been reaping heavy profits with the sustained and impressive success of the Switch, and as recently as last month, the Japanese giant announced that it would be investing as much as $880 million into expanding its game development division.

Now, it’s been announced (via Nikkei) that the company is building a new building next to its current main building in Kyoto. At the same time, the company is also renting two floors in the Kyoto City Waterworks Bureau’s new government building, starting May 2022. Finally, an entirely new building is also being constructed on the site of Nintendo’s old headquarters, which is currently the location of the Nintendo Kyoto Research Center.

With this expansion, Nintendo will look to expand its development capabilities and move more of its game production in-house, whereas until now the company has relied on outsourcing quite a bit.

These are, of course, long-term plans by definition, so it should be interesting to see how Nintendo’s output changes in the future.
