Nintendo had no choice. They are too far behind in terms of tech to suddenly start competing with the power war. In any case, their games are not really suited to power hungry photorealism. They have always leaned towards the comic book cartoon presentation and fun gameplay, which is easier to render and keeps the price down for their target audience.

Their market covers children, casuals and adults wanting to relive their childhood. Those gamers do not want to spend huge sums of money and are quite happy with a cartoon presentation with a party atmosphere. But it's a niche market. The only way they can make a huge impact is to attract lots of casuals like the Wii did, using some sort of party gimmick.

I'm not sure Nintendo can repeat that success again because the casuals have moved onto mobile phones and tablets. You can't just repeat the same thing and hope to get them back. You have to have something new, because it's the novel and new that attracts the casuals.

I agree but I trust Nintendo and Nvidia enough to believe they would produce a balanced machine. I don't own one yet but I know there are also powerful machines that lag and have issues PC or console.

There is a reason why PS4 launched in the west first and second in Japan.

Because of it's lower spec, they can iterate on the same design, perhaps even more quickly and with more availability after that "honeymoon". Much like they've done with the DS line, with just as much hype as anything else MS or Sony will come up with during that time period.

Nintendo has historically done this with the same reception every time. Nintendo managed to find an audience within the PC-in-your-living room approach that is XBO and PS4 with the Switch, as they did with the Wii during the XBox-360/PS3 era.

Nintendo will find that audience again, when PS5 and XB2 are out.

The only issue will be if they mis-step on that iteration like they did with the Wii-U.

And yet, is that not an acceptable trade off? For portability, for the ability to take that game with you on the go without having to pack up a heavy and easily-damaged box and all its power and connector cables? Or Rocket League, or Skyrim, or hypothetically Fallout?

If that doesn't appeal to you then obviously, getting the game on PC or another console is the way to go, but I think there's a significant audience who'll bite.

I've never had a Nintendo console as a lead console. After the Super Nintendo, all Nintendo consoles became third choice, sitting gathering dust for the odd few games worth playing (mainly exclusives). As for third-party games on the Switch, it's always going to be below average, so live with it. But I'm virtually convinced that the Switch honeymoon will be over within the next few years, then we'll see yet another console war between PS5 and Xbox Two.
