Nintendo NX Will Be A Home Console, Says Koei Tecmo CEO

The Japanese home console market will rebound with the release of the NX, Tecmo believes.

While we have all mostly settled on the idea that the Nintendo NX will be Nintendo’s new home console, it is important to note that Nintendo have not ever, in any official capacity, confirmed that it will be one- all they have said is that it will be ‘a new concept,’ or that it is ‘a new dedicated game platform.’ That could mean that it’s a new handheld, or even a software based platform that Nintendo is preparing for smartphones to distribute their games.

Don’t panic, though- that was just me raising alternate possibilities on what the NX theoretically could be. We’ve already heard third party publishers announce games for NX, which are coming to other home consoles, from which we have inferred that it may in fact be a home console. And now, another third party has hinted that it may be a home console after all.

Actually, I think that [the Japanese home console market will] start doing much better,” said Koei Tecmo’s President and CEO Yoichi Erikawa, in an interview with 4Gamer, translated by Siliconera. “The PlayStation 4 has recently surpassed 2 million units in nationwide sales, and Nintendo announced a new ‘machine’ called the NX. From this point forward, I believe that each company will make clear commitments for these machines.”

So whatever the NX ends up being, it is looking increasingly likely at this point that it will at least be a home console of some sort- now we just need to wait for Nintendo to officially reveal the damn thing already.
