Nintendo posts its first ever loss of $531 million; 3DS 17 million LTD

Analysts around the world expected Nintendo to perform poorly and post its first ever loss and Nintendo has done exactly that with a loss of $531 million. The earlier estimates was for $800 million, so this is much better than expected.

The 3DS missed the revised forecast of 14 million units and Nintendo shipped 500k less at 13.5 million. Total sales for the company for the FY was $7.9 billion. The 3DS has passed 17 million sales worldwide as of now and has moved 45 million units of software.

The Wii moved 9.8 million units, again, short of the forecasted amount and with 102 million units of software. The lifetime sales of the system is at 95 million units with over 800 million units of software shipped.

Nintendo expects to break even on the 3DS this year which means they will finally be making profit off the system. The system initially launched at a $250 price point and had a massive price drop to $160, which contributed to their first ever loss.
