Remember all the rumors surrounding the more powerful Nintendo Switch, which ended up being the Switch OLED? Nintendo hasn’t given any indication about moving on from the current Switch hardware. In recent media briefing (as reported by Bloomberg’s Takashi Mochizuki), Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa declined to comment on when the “next iteration of its marquee console” would be revealed.
However, as Mochizuki pointed out on Twitter, when there weren’t any plans to release new Switch hardware two years ago, Furukawa definitively said as much. The company did release the Switch OLED afterwards but that was essentially the same hardware in a new package (complete with a bigger dock).
Perhaps there’s something in the works but Nintendo is still working on several other factors. After all, Furukawa did say there’s “no end in sight” to the global semiconductor shortage, which could negatively impact any plans for manufacturing potential new hardware. Regardless of what the company has planned, the current Switch hardware is going to be the focus for the foreseeable future.
