Nintendo Reports Revenue Of ¥504 Million, 3DS Sales At 58.8 Million, Wii U Sales at 12.8 Million

A good year overall tempered by an extraordinarily weak last quarter.

The reason that Nintendo had that avalanche of news today was their earnings report- and while the new news that comes from the earnings report is always awesome, the point of one is ultimately, you know, to report earnings. And Nintendo did that, too.

On the whole, the news was good for them- they hit their forecasted revenue of ¥504 million. Very little of that, however, seems to have come in the last quarter- the hardware and software sales of the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U saw very little increases over where they were at the end of the previous quarter. On the whole, it seems that while Nintendo had a reasonably good year overall, they were hit by the post holiday slump, hard, in the last three months:

The updated sales numbers for their platforms:

  • Nintendo 3DS
    • 58.85 Million Units Sold Worldwide, With 274.14 Million Copies of Physical Software Sold
    • 5 Million Units of Hardware and 55 Million Copies of Physical Software Forecast For 2016-17
  • Wii U
    • 12.8 Million Units Sold Worldwide, With 84.04 Million Copies of Physical Software Sold
    • 0.8 Million Units of Hardware and 15 Million Copies of Physical Software Forecast For 2016-17

The Wii U sales forecast for 2016-17, in particular, is horrific- with Nintendo planning on selling just 800,000 units worldwide, it is clear that no new unannounced Wii U games, nor any price drops or similar promotions, are planned for the console.
