Nintendo Switch and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Lead The Charts In A Dismal Week For Japanese Game Sales

Dreary first place finish.

The week that follows right after Golden Week in Japan always sees a terrible slump in game hardware and software sales. This is a trend without fail, year in and year out. This year was no different- last week was the week that followed right in the wake of Golden Week, and… well, sales are down all around.

Nintendo Switch continues its uncontested dominance over the sales charts, selling 24,700 units. Nintendo’s six year old 3DS came in second, selling 17,500 units, and beating the PS4, which sold 17,200 units, by a hair. On the software front, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe was, naturally, top of the charts, with 36,400 units sold. Monster Hunter XX and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild‘s Switch version, rounded off what was a Top Three dominated exclusively by games on Nintendo platforms.

The Japanese industry has begun to show signs of recovery in recent years, and hopefully, this week is just the typical post Golden Week aberration. Maybe starting next week, we will be back to seeing stronger sales for games and game hardware in Japan.
