Nintendo Switch and Monster Hunter Continue Their Reign Over Japanese Charts

Nintendo's domination of the Japanese market continues.

Nintendo continues its absolute reign over the Japanese hardware sales charts, with the Nintendo Switch coming in at the top for another week running. The Switch, which sold 41,000 units this week, beat out the 3DS, which sold 25,600 units, the PS4, which sold 24,500 units, and the PS Vita, which sold 5,000 units. In the five weeks since the Switch has launched, it has consistently remained at the top of the hardware charts.

Nintendo had a victory on the software front, too- Capcom’s 3DS exclusive Monster Hunter XX topped the charts, with the Switch version of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild coming in at second place. The PS4 version of LEGO Worlds was the highest charting new release of the week, coming in at fifth place, with less than 12,000 units sold.

It’s all a bit dismal on that front, actually- but this is traditionally one of the slowest weeks of the year for video game sales. The upcoming release of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe should breathe some life into the market.
