The latest numbers by Media Create, tracking video game hardware and software sales in Japan for last week, are out, and it looks like the status quo has been maintained- Nintendo’s newly released Switch remains at the top of the charts, even seeing a week on week increase when everything else declined. Switch continues to sell out, and is apparently doing this well in spite of supply constraints.
Nintendo also took the second spot on the hardware charts, with the Nintendo 3DS coming in second place and ahead of the PS4, which had a puzzling decline. On the software fronts, Nintendo had a similarly strong showing, with the Nintendo 3DS game Monster Hunter XX topping the charts, and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild holding strong at second place.
Considering that the Switch has been able to hold strong in spite of a lack of new releases, it will be interesting to see how it does once Mario Kart 8 Deluxe launches for it later this month. One thing is for sure, though, Japan’s gaming market appears to have rebounded from the slump it was in.
