Of the three current platform holders, Nintendo was the last holdout when it came to a paid online subscription. Even when the Switch first launched, online was free. Now, though, the company has gotten in on that action with the Nintendo Switch Online service. It seems it’s been doing pretty well, all things considered, but there might be some concern about people renewing their subscriptions.
During their most recent financial results briefing, it was revealed that the service has now passed over 15 million subscribers. That’s quite the number, and is a pretty big boost within the last year, but Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa did indicate there was some worry about people renewing memberships. He says the company plans to continue offering new features to enhance the service.
“One more point to mention is the more than 15 million accounts worldwide with a paid membership to Nintendo Switch Online, and those sales occupy a certain presence within our digital sales,” said Furukawa. “But while new members continue to join, there are also those who do not renew their memberships.”
“We will continue to enhance the appeal of the service to bring more features and more fun to Nintendo Switch,” Furukawa added.
Nintendo Switch Online is required to play most games online on Nintendo Switch, as well as access the catalog of classic NES and SNES titles. It does still lack a lot of features, so hopefully it’s something Nintendo continues to improve.
