Nintendo’s Switch is showing no signs of slowing down or stopping. Today, Nintendo announced that the Switch has sold through (as in, directly to customers) 10 million units worldwide, just nine months since its launch. It’s an incredible feat, because it is now primed to outsell the Wii U’s 13.5 million lifetime sales by the end of 2017.
Interestingly enough, the Switch’s performance and timeline to reach 10 million seems to be more or less the same as the PS4- that system reached 10 million units sold in a little under nine months, while the Switch achieved it in slightly more than nine months. Of course, the Switch does not yet have a full Holiday season under its belt, while the PS4 did; conversely, the PS4 had not yet launched in Japan, while the Switch enjoyed a worldwide launch. Both systems reached the milestone ahead of the Xbox One, which took a year to hit the milestone.
Suffice it to say, however, both the Switch and PS4 are performing marvellously well- and it is clear that the Switch is now here to stay. I can’t wait to see what Nintendo does in 2018 to maintain this level of sales- it is clear they have big plans for their new hybrid. More important, however, is the fact that third parties can now no longer ignore the Switch- and support for the Switch should continue to swell from here on out.
