The Nintendo Switch’s momentum currently appears to be unstoppable- less than six months since its launch, the system has already sold 1.5 million units in Japan, according to Media Create (1,527,962 to be precise). This means that it is currently selling at a far brisker pace than the Wii, Wii U, and even the PS4.
Sales of the Switch has been buoyed by extremely strong demand for the device, which is tailored to meet the demands of the local market, as well as extremely strong support by Nintendo, which has seen a stream of constant heavy hitters – Breath of the Wild, Mario Kart 8, ARMS, and of course, Splatoon 2, which incidentally crossed 1 million units sold this week – since launch.
The Switch still has to catch up to the PS4, which, by virtue of launching earlier, has higher lifetime sales- but all in all, it looks like the Switch is set to do well in Japan- as in the rest of the world.
