We’ve been hearing rumblings of Nintendo’s hardware plans with the Switch for this year for a while now. But while most speculation so far has been centred on the possibility of a Switch Pro and a Switch Lite, it seems Nintendo may be about to throw us a curveball too—a Switch VR, so to speak.
Nintendo World Report’s Emily Rogers reports that, based on sources from inside the company, Nintendo is preparing to make VR announcement for this year, and that some first party games may be updated with VR support shortly after. This news seems to tie in to the patent regarding Switch VR Nintendo filed a while ago, as well as Nintendo’s own statements confirming their intent to bring VR to Switch eventually
The question now is how VR on the Switch will be handled. The Switch’s screen resolution is dramatically low for VR at 720p (even PlayStation VR’s 1080p resolution can feel too low at times), and the Switch, while a competent portable, doesn’t seem up to snuff when it comes to powering full blown high end VR. Will it be closer to the VR experiences provided by mobiles than it will be to something like PSVR, then? Is this all just a rumor that will come to nothing?
That all remains to be seen, but the prospect of Nintendo doing VR is incredibly exciting, so I’m keeping my eyes open for this.
