The Nintendo Switch’s success in Japan is incredible- its first year in Japan has been so successful that it has managed to outperform even the PS2’s legendary launch year. Throughout the year, the Switch has squarely led hardware sales in Japan- and in December, it has managed to exceed its own performance, with 491,000 units sold in just the last two weeks.
This accounts for 60% of the market share in the country, according to Media Create– which is impressive, but even more impressively, Switch has sold 1,076,000 games in Japan in the same period- which is the sign of a thriving software ecosystem.
The Switch is also the only console in Japan to currently be seeing growth, and is also en route to outselling the Wii U’s entire lifetime sales by the year’s end; as of right now, it seems like the Japanese gaming market is heavily driven by the Nintendo Switch’s success. Now the question is how many third parties will leverage this bustling new ecosystem going forward.
