Nintendo’s Iwata has reassured potential customers that their upcoming next-gen console, Wii U, will be priced affordably, and they have learnt lessons from what happened to the 3DS after the market reacted negatively to the $250 pricing.
What he believes is in Wii U’s favour is the fact that it’s the first system to feature an innovative tablet style controller. In Iwata’s words, “it’s like no other system before it.” He has also revealed that the 3DS will be profitable this fiscal year, and blamed the rise of Yen and 3DS price cut for the company’s first ever loss last fiscal year.
He admitted that the 3DS was priced high: “We won’t make the same mistake that we did with the 3DS, which was considered relatively high by consumers.”
It remains to be seen what they will price the Wii U at, but analysts are estimating the system to be 30,000 Yen, which equals $300, if the 3DS’ price is to be considered which was 25,000 Yen and $250 in the US.
