Two or three competitors should be fine at the most.
I disagree with Notch. Something like Steam should be an exception. I was offered multiple games for free on different clients, like Origin, Desura, and such, but I never took advantage of these free offers for the sole fact of keeping all my games organized. I understand the point here, but Steam has been the digital distribution monopoly for quite some time now and they're not in the deep when it comes to bad business practices.

I couldn't stand having to manage multiple clients on my desktop, eating up my resources, and then trying to figure out which one has the game I want to play.

Notch is a hypocrite and an asshole. He makes fun of other companies of DLC yet, he has his lawyers draw up lines that minecraft beta users will have to buy DLC. Then he gets mad at Yogscast and stops being a lead developer of minecraft. Notch is a bitch ass.

The problem I have with multiple distribution platforms is that I need a different application for each one. I don't want to have my game libraries in separate locations, and neither do most users. What should happen is the distribution platform should be independent of any pricing obligations, and let the publisher/developer set the prices. It still promotes competition among the developers. Competition among distribution platforms should not be an issue if one platform is simple, functional, and stable.
