Nvidia finally revealed its gaming ambitions for the year at CES 2014 with the Tegra K1, a mobile CPU that is apparently more powerful than the Xbox 360 and PS3 according to CEO Jen-Hsun Huang.
As reported by Polygon, Huang described the 192 CUDA core, Keplar architecture-based CPU as “all fully programmable, all massively parallel. We’ve brought mobile computing to the same level as desktop computing. We’ve brought mobile computing to the same level as super computing. We’ve brought the heart of GeForce and the soul of Tesla to the Tegra family.”
Just how impressive is the power of the CPU? It’s apparently capable of running Unreal Engine 4 with Epic Games’ Tim Sweeney stating that, “We can take absolutely anything that runs on PC or high-end console and run it on Tegra. I didn’t think that we’d be at this level on mobile for another three to four years.”
All this power will of course consume far less power than both current-gen consoles and while the K1 will appear in smartphones and tablets, don’t be surprised to see it used for Smart TVs and Smart Cars. Your thoughts? Let us know below.
