In reply to <a href="https://gamingbolt.com/playstation-4-5-in-development-features-upgraded-gpu-report#comment-288160">Knowles2</a>.

It perfectly makes sense.

So far, in the video game history, manufacturers were able to release a 'slim' version, by using a smaller cpu, by reducing heat , etc etc.

Only this time, the cpu is actually an APU, which means the cpu and gpu and other controllers are on the same die.

thus, if Sony wants to use a smaller cpu, the whole chip will have to be redesigned.

So, why not upgrading the cpu, with a 2016 model, that could see the frequency go up to 2.5 or 3 GHz, instead of the current 1.6ghz AND AT THE SALE TIME , upgrade the graphic chip, that, compared to the 2012-2013 version, could get a frequency bump as well, and could receive some extra controllers, like a 4k video encoder/decoder, among other upgrades, that could end up needing 20 to 40% less energy. .. and less energy means less heat.

Because it would not be possible to decrease the cpu size without 'touching' all the other parts, why not use that requirement, to do some little upgrades here and there?

Also, the future of the cpus is scalability and multi-multi-multi cpus and cores.
Next amd cpus should start with 16 cores, and quickly reach 32 or more cores.
Because it's easier to have 50 cores at lower frequency, than 4 or 6, at extremely high clocks.

For sure, the PS5 will be a system with a base cpu and gpu, and gamers will be able to buy some 'PS power' boxes, that, once connected to the main system, a game should be able to use that extra 50, 80, 100, 150.. or even 200% power (boxes will have different prices and power output), to be able to display better graphics, textures, etc. The more we buy those boxes, the more power the syst em will have, the better graphics will be.

Also, since 2007, people got used to spending 200-700 bucks, every 6 months, on a new iPhone or iPad or device. And because every 6-9 months, graphics on those devices get better and better, thanks to a much faster cpu/gpu,

Why should Sony have to wait 10 years, to sell another console to the public?

I imagine Sony was expecting to sell like 60-70 million consoles, by 2018-2020.
Well, 3 little years after release, Sony is close to 50 million units sold. And with all the fantastic titles like uncharted 4, by the end of 2016, they will have sold close to 60 millions!

That's why it would be stupid, to release a ps4 slim, cheaper, by Nov 2016, to release an ultra slim, by 2018, when they could be selling a new model, this year.

I don't want to wait another 5 years to see better graphics. If, by November 2016, I can buy a ps4.5, and have 2-3 times more power, PLUS 4k blu-ray vídeo playback,

I say YES.

I don't see how this fragments anything. PC games are designed to run on PCs with the highest hardware to the lowest, so why can't this also be done for Xb1 PS4 games? The games only need to be able to run on the previous X1 PS4 hardware, and the new hardware only needs to be able to run previous games, and those who have the more powerful consoles enjoy all the bells and whistles, and those with the previous model enjoy the basic games like we have now.

I like how some think MS is trying to kill anything, and Sony is following. Maybe this was the goal for Sony and MS all along, to make incremental console changes instead of releasing new hardware every 5-8 years.

If it is done well there'll be no fragmenting. The model Spencer gave was that of a cell phone which I think is just right. MS won't implement this until next gen as it's too late now and probably not probable this gen.
