PS3 Gets Optional Firmware Update with 4.21 Release

We’ll take the opportunity to avoid an “cross game chat support” jokes, don’t worry. Sony has recently confirmed via Twitter that the Playstation 3 will be getting a new firmware update. And interestingly enough, it’s totally optional.

The update referred to 4.21 will supposedly improve stability in the software. Has anyone been complaining about poor performance lately? This one’s for you then.

From the official Playstation Twitter page:

PS3 system software update 4.21 will be released soon. It’s a minor, optional update that improves software stability.

So don’t expect any major changes. Why it would be made optional when it’s clearly beneficial is anyone’s guess, but it doesn’t hurt to have the choice.

To upgrade to the new patch, simply select “System Update” in the XMB when the update is released.

In case anyone is still wondering, by the way, cross-game chat is never coming. Seriously. Let it go, move on, start seeing other people, that kind of thing.
