But firmware/software updates are the norm in this age of connectivity and smart gadgets. In recent months I have downloaded updates for 360, PS3, my Onkyo AV amplifier and Samsung blu ray and TV. For most, this hasn;t been the first time in an ongoing process of adding functionality and fixing bugs.

Both the XBO and the PS4 went into manufacture months ago, so their firmwares and software bases are already out of date. In the interim all sorts of things have happened: licensing agreements, UI tweaks, and many of those inevitable bugs have been jumped on. Frankly I’d rather have a fully-functioning up-to-the-minute machine on day one than one which is, in a sense, already out of date.
