Red Dead Redemption 1 features over a dozen outfits that are acquireable in a variety of ways. This RDR1 guide will detail each of the available outfits and how to go about getting them.
Bandito Outfit
The Cowboy Outfit with a Mexican twist, including a sombrero, double bandoliers, and unique boots. Collect six scraps including capturing a live Bandito bounty to unlock. Donning the Bandito Outfit makes Banditos friendly, except those in Fort Mercer.
Bollard Twins Outfit
The Cowboy Outfit but with a red bandana and chaps, in line with the outfits worn by members of the Bollard Twins gang. Discovered by searching the bodies of enemies in the mission “Justice in Pike’s Basin”. Makes the Bollard Twins gang non-hostile unless and until you initiate violence.
Bureau Uniform
Modifies the Elegant Suit with a black waistcoat and tie, and a bowler hat to match the look of a Bureau of Investigation agent. Unlocked upon achieving a 100% completion of the game. Prevents you from participating in acts of robbery, but makes you immune to law enforcement in both the United States and Mexico. People will still retaliate if fired upon, regardless of the social status of this outfit.
Cowboy Outfit
This iconic classic is the default outfit which you begin the game with. An eagle-feathered, dark cowboy hat, paired with black gloves and jeans, a beige shirt under a denim waistcoat, and dark, spurred cowboy boots. Offers no perks.
Deadly Assassin
A decidedly all-black outfit paired with an eyepatch. It requires five scraps to unlock and completion of the “American Appetites” side mission. Regenerates Dead-Eye at twice the rate.
Duster Coat
A modification to the classic Cowboy Outfit, this adds a brown leather duster coat on top. Unlocked upon attaining the Peacemaker honor level. Offers no perks.
Elegant Suit
Practically the Cowboy Outfit, but much more formal with a waistcoat, blazer, and tie. Play a game of poker or enter the tailor’s shop in Thieves’ Landing to unlock, then buy it for $70. This outfit allows cheating at games of poker by stashing a card up its sleeves everytime you deal cards.
Expert Hunter
An outfit constructed from animal pelts including badger skin hat, animal skin vest, and leather shirt. Five scraps and completion of the “Daedalus and Son” side mission is required. Doubles hunting drops, including skins, hides, vittles, and hearts.
Gentlemen’s Attire
A pristine white suit. Requires the completion of the mission “New Friends, Old Problems” to unlock. The outfit itself unlocks access to the $250 high-stakes Poker games at the Blackwater Hotel.
Jack’s Cowboy Outfit
Simply Jack’s variant of the Cowboy Outfit. Completing the mission “The Last Enemy That Shall Be Destroyed” is a requirement. Offers no perks.
Legend of the West
A Cowboy Outfit with a black waistcoat and black duster. Requires completion of all four ambient challenges–Sharpshooter, Survivalist, Master Hunter, and Treasure Hunter). Doubles the maximum duration of Dead-Eye Targeting.
Mexican Poncho
Another modification to the base Cowboy Outfit, this throws a worn poncho over the ensemble instead. Unlocked by purchasing any safehouse in Mexico. Offers no perks.
Rancher Outfit
John Marston’s version of the Cowboy Outfit, in gray–both shirt and waistcoat. Brown rancher pants, and rancher boots. Requires completion of the mission “The Outlaw’s Return”. Offers no perks.
Reyes’ Rebels Outfit
Similar to the Mexican Poncho, but a different design and a headband rather than a hat. Requires completion of the mission “An Appointed Time” and six scraps. Grants immunity when in Mexico from all manner of law enforcement, including posses, bounty hunters, lawmen, and the Mexican Army.
Savvy Merchant Outfit
Yet another Cowboy Outfit variant, with a flat cap and different coat. Five scraps and completion of the side mission “The Prohibitionist” is required. Halves the cost of all Gunsmith store items, and this perk effect stacks with Peacemaker high honor discount. No effect on sell values.
Treasure Hunter Outfit
A new outfit with a filthy, pink shirt and tan pants tucked into socks, and foregoing the usual cowboy boots for some kind of other boots. Collect six scraps and part with $250 to unlock. Wearing it will keep Treasure Hunters from attacking you first.
Walton’s Gang Outfit
This swaps out the hat and the shirt from the Cowboy Outfit, and tucks the pant legs into the boots. The Walton’s Gang Outfit is exclusive to the GOTY edition of the game. Wearing it keeps the peace with members of Walton’s gang up until you actually provoke retaliation.
US Army Uniform
A near complete US Army Uniform, excluding sleeve rank insignia. Requires six scraps and completion of the mission “The Last Enemy That Shall Be Destroyed”. Has no practical effect in-game, other than to cause NPCs to salute you.
US Marshal Uniform
Similar to the Cowboy Outfit, but a black waistcoat, and different shirt and boots. Clear out all five American gang hideouts inside of 24 game hours to unlock this, but only after the mission “The Last Enemy That Shall Be Destroyed” is complete. Effectively makes you a Marshal by wearing it, leading to practical immunity from sheriffs, deputies, posses, and other Marshals, unless witnessed in criminal acts.
And those are all the outfits obtainable in Red Dead Redemption 1.
