LucasArts’ point-and-click adventure series Monkey Island is considered one of the classics in video games, having cemented an enduring legacy with its brilliant storytelling and memorable characters. While Monkey Island was quite an active series in its prime, it has been largely dormant for a while, with 2010’s re-release Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge: Special Edition being the last time it was active. It seems, however, that that is soon to change, thanks to the reveal of Return to Monkey Island.
The next mainline instalment in the series is being developed by Terrible Toybox in collaboration with Lucasfilm Games, with Devolver Digital set to publish, and is set after the original Monkey Island and Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge. Ron Gilbert, one of the original creators of the first two games, will be returning to direct and design Return to Monkey Island, with Dave Grossman returning to co-write the story and voice actor Dominic Armator reprising his role as Guybrush Threepwood. Additionally, Michael Land, Peter McConnell, and Clint Bajakian, who previously worked on past Monkey Island games, are returning to compose the soundtrack.
There is no news yet on what platforms Return to Monkey Island will be available for or when exactly it’s going to launch, but Devolver Digital has confirmed that it will release sometime this year. Check out its announcement trailer below.
