Ever since Shenmue 3 was announced, it has been one of those games where we get a little piece of the puzzle every so often, thanks in large part because the game is largely being crowdfunded. To that end, the developers just announced the title has hit another stretch goal and that means Shenmue 3 will have proper ragdoll reaction to the game’s combat system.
In order to attain this goal, the company had to top more than $6.5 million in backings through Kickstarter and their slacker backer campaign using Paypal. Those two campaigns were indeed able to meet the mark, which happens to be a new record for crowdfunded campaigns.
Despite the fact that the game has indeed hit new records, it appears the game’s developers aren’t really anywhere near where they need to be in order to make the game what they would eventually like to see. Yu Suzuki has said that in order to bring the entire world of Shenmue 3 to the game, the development team will have to raise more than $10 million. At the same time, Suzuki has said that they will make the best game possible no matter what level of funding they reach. One wonders if Sega might eventually pick up whatever’s left over if they get close, or whether Sega is the one that told the team they need to raise at least $10 million. Shenmue 3 is tentatively slated to arrive on the PS4 exclusively in December of 2017.
