I’m well aware

Except those with Xbox Ones and PS4s aren’t being lured into a new ecosystem. The Xbox One at launch didn’t play 360 games and the 360 didn’t play future Xbox One titles. There was a reason to make sure players reinvested. The PS4 didn’t play PS3 games and the PS3 doesn’t play PS4 games, meaning each company had reasons to make sure people reinvested in their ecosystem. We already know that Xbox One and PS4 are forward compatible. Even if those people never upgrade to Neo/Scorpio, they are already invested in their respective ecosystems and will get that same money because those future games are all compatible with the consoles they already own. MS and Sony weren’t going to make money on people without a console that plays current games. Now, MS and Sony will still make that same money on people because they will still be able to current games even if they run worse.

I wish each company offered an upgrade program. I truly do. But from the business side it would be absolutely stupid of them to do it and Sony literally couldn’t even afford to do it if they wanted to.

There are going to be at least 2 new SKUs released for the Xbox one. The first will be a slimmer xbox one, tat has a larger hard drive and can do 4k video playback only, NOT games, just 4k Netflix and the like, and I’m not sure about VR gaming.

The second SKU is going to be the Xbox Scorpio, which is an upgraded system. It has 4k gaming and video capability, as well as VR. It has increased specs and will play all games that are currently playable on xbox one, including BC xbox 360 games. If a game has certain features that were scaled down or turned off due to hardware limits in the Xbox one, they will be turned on on the Xbox scorpio.

Why wouldn’t they? Both Sony and Microsoft offered trade-in programs for the ps4 and Xbox one, respectively. A trade-in deal is an incentive to get people to be early adopters of their new hardware and helps drive sales.

We live in a world now where most people can’t afford to spend $500 every couple of years on consoles, following a long period of austerity. A trade-in from XB1 to Scorpio, or PS4 to PS4 Neo, shouldn’t be too much to demand from the industry.

Not really, but I can understand why so many view it that way. The reality is that consoles will operate like phones and PCs in their upgrade schemes going forward. The “platform” is now the OS and APIs, which will span multiple hardware generations. This is no different than buying a Galaxy S6 to replace an S5. It’s still the same platform, just a new hardware SKU. But, it is absolutely a new generation.

I don’t think Sony or Microsoft take Nintendo into consideration when making decisions. Nintendo’s really in it’s own separate industry.
