When the trailer for the Sonic the Hedgehog live action adaptation dropped, the reaction was… a lot of different things. You never know, of course, and there was a decent amount of talent involved, so the film could end up being a fun romp. The one thing that seemed to be universally disliked, however, was the design of the titular character. Even the character’s creator weighed in to say he wasn’t much of fan. The filmmakers would go on to announce that, in response to feedback, they’d be changing Sonic’s design- which has had repercussions. The film’s now been officially delayed into next year.
You can see the tweet below from the film’s director, Jeff Fowler. It features a picture of Sonic’s gloved hand holding up a sign with a date of February 14, 2020, with a message saying they want to make Sonic right.
It’s a pretty interesting development. Since Sonic will obviously be a key part of the film, the task of going through the whole thing with a redesigned model is going to take quite a lot of time and work. We’ll see if it pays off when the film hits theatres next year.
