I didn’t say the PS One was the first console to use CD ROMs. The TurboGrafx-16 CD addon released in 1988 was the first console to use CD ROMs not the Sega CD. That was also the year that Nintendo announced a partnership with Sony for a CD addon, and the year that Sega started working on the Sega CD. And who created the CD ROM?

I didn’t mean music. I was only referring to movies. The original Xbox couldn’t play movies because Microsoft didn’t want to pay DVD licensing fees so they greedily pushed that cost onto their customers by forcing them to buy an IR dongle to unlock movie playback. Regardless, what was the first console to play DVD ROMs?

HD-DVD and Blu Ray are both similar and derived from the same technology Sony created. After the Blu Ray Disc was created between a partnership of Sony and Phillips the Blu Ray Disc Association was founded but Toshiba decided to make their own version or format to compete with Blu Ray and HD-DVD was created. Later on Microsoft decided to support it but Microsoft didn’t make HD-DVD. I don’t know why they supported it but it failed miserably after they rushed the Xbox 360 out with a DVD drive and tried to shoehorn in an HD-DVD add on.

I’m not here to argue about who did what first. I’m simply proving to Tech Junkie that Microsoft didn’t create the idea of a video game consoles as an entertainment center.

If you want to talk about firsts and where somebody got an idea from for consoles, Xbox had Xbox live before PSN existed. People criticized MSFT for charging for XBL, yet now look at what Sony is doing. Sony is seeing the success in what MSFT is doing, which is why they are starting to do the same thing. I know it goes both ways though. MSFT has taken a few things from Sony, but as it stands now, Sony is trying to follow MSFT’s lead – even if Sony is leading this “console war.”
