Splatoon 2 Crosses 2 Million Units Sold in Japan

Nintendo's hit multiplayer shooter becomes the first game to cross a significant milestone in Japan in a very long time.

Nintendo’s Splatoon 2, the hit sequel to their cult hit multiplayer shooter on the Wii U, has crossed a significant milestone in Japan, where it has crossed 2 million copies sold. It becomes one of very few console games in Japan in the last decade – indeed, ever – to touch this milestone.

Splatoon 2 has achieved this in just under six months. It’s been consistently in the Japanese Top 10 charts since its release last year, and currently enjoys a staggering attach rate of over 50% in the country. It is, obviously, also the highest selling Switch game in the nation, having outsold The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and Super Mario Odyssey.

Given Splatoon‘s popularity in Japan – it is an exceptionally popular brand with fans across all ages – and the fact that sales for the game show no sign of slowing down, it will be very interesting to see where Splatoon 2 ends up in the country for its lifetime sales. I can see it selling for a very long time to come, right alongside the Switch.
