This has been such a great year for new IPs. Previously, we saw Dying Light, Bloodborne, and Project CARS all do well, with the latter two breaching a million units sold worldwide. Now, Splatoon, Nintendo’s newest IP, and the first major internally developed retail franchise they have created since the release of Pikmin over a decade ago, is another addition to that list, as Nintendo announced today that Splatoon has sold over 1 million units worldwide.
This announcement comes less than a month after the game’s original release, indicating a crazy rate of sales- considering that the game released on a dead platform like the Wii U, that is even more impressive. The figure includes more than 476,000 physical and digital units sold in the Americas, more than 368,000 sold in Japan, more than 230,000 sold in Europe and an additional 20,000 sold in Australia and New Zealand.
Splatoon is an online team based arena shooter with some innovative mechanics, and a typically Nintendo take on the shooter genre. It’s one of the most inventive games we have seen in a while, and it’s good to see that Nintendo’s investment in new IP is paying off- it might encourage them to invest in more.
