Nintendo just released their latest financial earnings report, and while it was good news all round for them, the brightest spot in the earnings report probably came from their software data– Nintendo confirmed that their software continues to sell at an unusually good pace- Super Mario Maker is now at 3.3 million copies sold, The Legend of Zelda: Triforce Heroes is at 1.01 million units sold, Yoshi’s Woolly World at 1.3 million units sold, Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer is at 2.3 million units sold, while older Nintendo games continue to sell at an enormous clip.
The most important of these is Mario Kart 8- the excellent racer has sold 7.2 million units worldwide, which means over 50% of all Wii U owners own a copy of the game. Equally impressive is Splatoon‘s performance- Nintendo’s quirky third person shooter launched last May, and has since gone on to sell 4.02 million copies worldwide. This is a dramatic increase from the 2.4 million copies it had sold by September last year, and the highest number an exclusive new IP for consoles has posted this generation- considering the game was out on the Wii U, these numbers are impressive by any stretch of the imagination.
Hopefully, Splatoon‘s success convinces Nintendo to take some risks and invest in some new IPs more.
