Nintendo’s Splatoon may be a third person shooter with multiplayer aspects and cooperation, but it won’t feature voice chat like other conventional shooters. Co-director Yusuke Amano told EDGE (via GamesRadar) that this was due to a negative personal experience online. In Splatoon, the lack of voice chat will help those who aren’t comfortable with your average shooter.
Given the team-based aspects, some form of communication is necessary. To that effect, there will be a “phrase system” for helping players communicate with each other. Whether this will be enough remains to be seen but suffice to say that we need to wait and find out.
Splatoon will be receiving more information via a Nintendo Direct presentation on May 7th at 7 AM PST. The game itself will be releasing on May 29th in North America and Europe.
