Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s Director Explains Why Kirby Survived The World of Light Catastrophe

It turns out Sakurai was biased towards Kirby all along!

Masahiro Sakurai, the creator and director of the Super Smash Bros. series, including the upcoming Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, also created the Kirby franchise back in the day. So when Kirby became the lone character to survive the cataclysmic catastrophe in Smash Ultimate’s much hyped World of Light story mode’s trailer, a lot of fans speculated, for fun, that one reason for that might be that Sakurai is biased towards Kirby.

Speaking in his Famitsu column (via Ryokutya), Sakurai basically admitted that yes, this is true. He noted that since he created Kirby, he has a bias for the character, and that ended up playing into his survival. That said, he also emphasized that narratively, only a character who could actually escape the catastrophe via a feasible means of escape could have done so—and Kirby was the only one who fit the bill.

It’s amusing to hear that even after all these years, Sakurai has a soft spot for Kirby.  If you haven’t already, make sure to see the trailer for World of Light for yourself below. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate launches for Nintendo Switch on December 7.
