'This is bigger than gaming.'

It might look like we are headed towards a virtual reality renaissance/movement, judging solely on the fervor that the upcoming Oculus Rift, and to a lesser extent, Sony’s Morpheus for the PlayStation 4, generate, but to be honest, the average person who doesn’t follow technology or games neither knows nor cares about VR, plus has negative connotations associated with it, thanks to earlier, unsuccessful, aborted attempts at the technology.

There have been many who have said that the coming VR wave is a fad, that it will be like 3D, it will come and fizzle out. Renowned industry analyst Michael Pachter expressed that opinion earlier this year in an exclusive interview with GamingBolt.

Addressing all of these critics and concerns, Oculus Rift founder Palmer Luckey said that most people simply don’t understand the potential applications of virtual reality, which go far beyond just video games.

“I don’t think they understand why it’s relevant to them yet,” Luckey said. “A lot of people, even if they know what VR is, see it as this tool to go in your basement and play Halo. I was about to correct myself and say another game, but that’s what a grandmother would say: ‘Oh, you’re going to plug it into your Nintendo and play Halo.'”

However, he also thinks that that will change soon. “They’re going to see this is relevant to them in their daily lives as a not-pimply-faced-teenage-kid,” he said. “That’s going to be a difficult perception to overcome.”

This actually implies that Luckey is looking at virtual reality as something bigger than just gaming, which is in fact a sentiment shared by Michael Pachter too.

Personally, I’m one of those people who are simply not sold on virtual reality yet. I mean, it’s cool and everything, but no, I just don’t see it taking off.

If you remember, Guerrilla Games’ Killzone 3 was used by Sony to demonstrate its push towards 3D gaming. Despite this, there are currently no plans to include stereoscopic 3D in Killzone: Shadow Fall which recently launched in North America for the PS4. Guerrilla stated this to a fan’s inquiry on Twitter, though a request has been passed to the development team.

@Rtgamerguy We currently don't have any plans for 3D support, but I'll pass your request along to the team.

Did you buy a 3D TV for the sole purpose of 3D games on Sony’s platforms? Though Sony has reduced its 3D gaming push, it’s fairly plausible that we’ll see their return sooner than later.

Killzone: Shadow Fall has received some fairly decent critical acclaim with its fair share of mixed reactions, especially to the single-player mode. Having released on the PlayStation 4, it will also be available in Europe when the PS4 launches on November 29th. Stay tuned for more details on the same. In the meantime, what are your thoughts on no 3D gaming for Shadow Fall at this time?

Xbox One supports 3D and 4K Video Content

Microsoft spokesperson Larry Hryb (Major Nelson), officially confirmed that the next-generation Xbox console does support 3D and 4K resolution standards.

“Xbox One supports both 3D and 4K,” said Hryb during a live Q&A session with gamers via Yahoo.

4K is also known as 4K Ultra HD which is four-times the resolution of current ‘Full HD’ standards. 1920 x 1080 is currently considered ‘Full HD”. Meanwhile, 4K Ultra HD would be 3840 x 2160 which s a immense difference and the next level of High Definition TVs.

TVs that support 4K HD already exist out in the market, however; they’re extremely expensive and it will take a long time for 4K resolution to get adopted in new homes.

Sony’s PlayStation 4 also supports 4K resolution output for video but not games.

Major Nelson was a bit vague during his statement, but its safe to assume that the 4K resolution will be limited to video content only.

Let us know if you’re looking forward to watching your favorite movies or videos utilizing the 4K resolution TVs in the comments below.

Killzone 3 is a freaking beauty, we know that. It looks perfect, and it might even play perfect, and both these qualities might be furthermore enhanced in-game with the inclusion of support for PlayStation Move and stereoscopic 3D. Herman Hulst, studio manager of Guerrilla Games, has promised that Move and 3D support will not be sidelined, though he also said that players without 3D or Move will not have a half-assed experience.

“3D is a great feature, but it’s an option to the game,” Hulst said while talking to 1UP. “I don’t want people who don’t have 3D to have a suboptimal experience.”

“That said, if you play it in 3D… you see some of the cuts scenes and sequences in 3D, they look outstanding. They really pull you into the action. You’re more than ever submerged.

“But we don’t want to alienate the core audience,” he continued. “The same with Move. These things are options. They’re great options. I think they’re here to stay. Just like we moved from mono sound to stereo sound. You wouldn’t want to go back after awhile. But you don’t force people to buy another transistor radio. When they’re ready. We have to listen to the audience in that regard.”

Hulst went on to talk about new ways to attract people to the Killzone brand. “We try to broaden it by implementing features like Move,” he said. “And Move implemented in the gun peripheral. I think that brings in an audience that isn’t necessarily familiar with the DualShock. It might be a PC gamer that’s not used to the two analogue sticks. Sometimes it’s more intuitive for people to have a Move-like control.

“We also have an easy mode that’s got a full-cross hair lock — very easy to play. But if you find that too easy you can just have camera lock. And if you want to show that you can excel without any of the locks, you switch all the locks off. So you can customise the game.”

Stay tuned, we’ll have more information soon.

Humility knows no bounds. It also doesn’t know Sony, who are as arrogant as ever.

Dr. Richard Marks, the man behind the Eyetoy, and now the upcoming Playstation Move, who has gone on record to state that the Kinect is limited, has now stated that the upcoming Playstation Move peripheral, which is Sony’s me too entry to the motion controls bandwagon, is better than a PC mouse and keyboard for gaming.

“I think that PC RTS games are designed right now for the mouse and keyboard, but I think the Move can work with the more general idea of an RTS really well,” he claims.

“It could play a PC RTS really well, but I think there is modifications on the RTS genre that will be really good with. I play a lot of RTS games but the way I think about it is you have a landscape below you with all the troops, and imagine you’re the general and you just want to look out over your troops and select guys – tell them to attack there.

“I think that with Move would feel way better than a mouse for that, for example, and doing things that require some 3D information is much better with Move. The RTS genre has been designed not to require any 3D information, but having that extra dimension and all the angle data that we have too is also very interesting.”

Okay, we get it already. The Move and 3D, as propogated by Sony, are the future of gaming. Never mind that 3D will never catch on, and that the Move is a rip off of technology that’s already half a decade old.

Apparently, Ubisoft is willing to share the wealth some of its exclusives have been making recently. Otherwise, I just cannot for the life of me fathom why they would make a prediction as insane as this. But they have, and Ubisoft really seem to believe there will be a 3DTV in every home in just three years.

In this economy? When there are so many barriers to the technology’s adoption? When the existing 3DTV mrket is so fragmented? Fat chance.

“Ubisoft are a big fan of 3D,” UK marketing boss Murray Pannel told Eurogamer.

“We were the first publisher to create a proper 3D game with Avatar last year. Ahead of its time in many ways because the technology was in its infancy and you couldn’t buy 3D TVs at all.

“The truth is I think it is a technology that’s coming. We can’t ignore it. It’ll start slowly this year. But like HDTV I wouldn’t rule out the fact that this will be installed in everyone’s living room in three year’s time, and for us to be in a position to have content that could really look absolutely amazing in 3D.”

Of course, this can only benefit electronics giant Sony, which is giving 3DTV console gaming a major push with its console, as their E3 presser amply demonstrated. However, the public at large remains largely indifferent to 3D technology (barring the universally well received 3DS, of course), and there are techies who believe the technology will remain a nice market for years to come.

Ubisoft believes different.

“That’s not to say every game needs to be in 3D,” Pannel explained. “We’re showing Shaun White Skateboarding in 3D. We showed Avatar. We’ve got other games with 3D functionality built in as well. It’s coming. It’s not going to happen this year.

“For the naysayers, if you like, I would say, ‘Just watch this space’, because when you have global corporations like Sony pushing 3D as hard as they possibly can, Sky, equally, showcasing 3D content on TV, I believe it will become a much more important part of consumer electronics than a lot of people believe.”

Okay, Ubisoft. If you say so. Can I have a couple of thousand bucks so my home can also have a 3DTV?
