The latest Media Create sales charts are out and along with revealing strong sales for Super Smash Bros. Wii U – which released on December 6th and managed to sell 227,527 units in a single day (with the charts tallied up to December 7th – they showcase increased sales for the Wii U.

The Wii U managed to sell 24,469 units which is nearly doubly that of the previous week’s sales of 12,496 units. The 3DS XL and 3DS also did very well but the New 3DS XL took the charts with 63,417 units sold in the week. Nintendo is currently working on phasing out the old 3DS XL model in Japan which explains the uptick in New 3DS XL sales.

The only consoles that saw a slight decrease in sales were the PS Vita, Xbox 360/One and PS Vita TV. What are your thoughts on the success of the Wii U though following the release of Super Smash Bros. Wii U? Let us know in the comments.

Nintendo is phasing out the older 3DS XL model.

In light of the 2DS and New 3DS XL in Japan, Nintendo has announced (translated by Siliconera) that it will be discontinuing the manufacture and sale of the 3DS XL in Japan. That’s the old one, for those who didn’t know, and does not include the 3DS at this time.

As of now, the New 3DS XL is available in Japan and Australia only so those in Europe or the United States who are worried about their older devices can relax. Speaking to GameSpot, Nintendo stated that the “Nintendo 3DS XL is still available in Europe and no announcements have been made.”

The New 3DS XL will be releasing in 2015 for the West though no details have been provided yet. Those who live in Japan who want to partake in Nintendo’s handheld offerings will need to pick up the new models though. What are your thoughts on the older 3DS XL model being discontinued? Let us know in the comments.

Meanwhile, Wii U sales stay steady.

Media Create hardware charts for the period of August 25th to 31st have emerged, indicating the sales of gaming consoles in Japan. To no one’s surprise, the Nintendo 3DS XL is the top-selling platform in Japan for the past week, beating out the PS Vita and Wii U.

The 3DS XL sold 30,111 units in the past week which is up from the prior week’s 28,788 units. The PS Vita saw a small rise in sales to 19,578 units from an earlier 15,309 units. Wii U sales have somewhat stagnated but are still fairly solid considering the console’s shabby performance entering 2014. It sold 8,584 units with 8,985 units sold the week before last.

In other news, the Xbox 360’s sales hit a low of 86 units sold. This isn’t anything new – the console has been under-performing since it launched all those years ago – but when you consider that the Xbox One will be out tomorrow in Japan, it’s worrying. We’ll find out next week just how the Xbox One performs so stay tuned.

3DS XL sells more than 40,000 units in past week.

Media Create has finally revealed sales figures for the period of August 11th to August 17th, which was the week that Nintendo released Hyrule Warriors. The game’s sales will be revealed later today but it’s reportedly seeing a strong reception. That would make sense since Wii U sales are up by a decent amount.

As compared to the prior week, where the Wii U sold 13,598 units, the console sold 18,161 units in the past week. The Nintendo 3DS XL was far and away the best selling platform of the week with 42,365 units sold. That’s a substantial increase from the prior week’s 33,172 units. Even sales of the regular 3DS are up to 9,429 units in the past week.

Sales of the PS Vita are up from 17,084 units to 20,825 units which doesn’t mark a significant increase. This makes sense considering there haven’t been many big name titles in the past month or so, and really, with the support Sony’s shown lately it’s very possible that these numbers remain the same. Stay tuned for more information on Media Create’s software sales.

PS4 and Wii U sales remain relatively stable.

The Nintendo 3DS XL has long since returned to dominance in Japan and the latest hardware sales from Media Create for the week of July 28th to August 3rd indicate as much. The 3DS XL sold 31,740 units in that time, which is only slightly less than the prior week’s 31,789 units. The regular 3DS also saw relatively good sales, selling 7,019 units in the past week.

Meanwhile, PS Vita sales are slightly down in the past week with 17,179 units sold (while the week prior to this it sold 21,875 units). The Wii U has remained steady in its sales with 9,646 units sold this week. As for the PS4, it sold 5,695 units in the past week. This could be due to the lack of major releases for the platform in Japan, with the only real big name being Drive Club in October.

What are your thoughts on the hardware sales in Japan? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

The latest Japanese hardware sales for the week of June 30th to July 6th are in and as always, Media Create lists the 3DS XL as the number one selling platform in the country.

Nintendo’s handheld sold 21,914 units in the past week but has faced significant competition from the PS Vita, which sold 18,438 units. The former managed to sell 22,803 units while the latter has 22,192 units sold to its credit in the prior week so while the gap has increased slightly, it’s testament to the fact that the Vita isn’t down and out in Japan.

Another console that has been performing consistently well in the past two months is the Wii U. It sold 9,961 units this week, as opposed to 10,653 units the week prior and has been riding off the success of Mario Kart 8. With games like Hyrule Warriors soon to release in Japan, Nintendo could finally be emerging from its rut in this generation.

It was a rather quiet week for releases in Japan, according to the latest Media Create sales charts. The two new releases – The Idolmaster: One for All on PS3 and Genkai Totsuki Moero Chronicle on the PS Vita – entered at first and second respectively. The former sold 83,395 units in its debut while the latter managed to sell 32,957 units.

Meanwhile, last week’s number one Yokai Watch fell to third place but still managed to sell 30,305 units for a total lifetime sales of 950,035 units. Mario Golf: World Tour sold 9,439 units while its lifetime sales came to 86,210 units. This was followed by Mario Party: Island Tour which sold 8,049 units (lifetime sales at 371,184 units).

Theatrhythm Final Fantasy: Curtain Call is doing fine though not quite notching up big numbers. It sold 4,594 units on the 3DS and its lifetime sales are at 120,549 units. Monster Hunter 4 rose back to the top ten and managed to sell 3,386 units. It’s lifetime sales are currently at 3,277,125 units.

Media Create has posted its hardware sales for the week of April 28th to May 4th and the 3DS is number one yet again. After last week, it seems that Nintendo’s handheld has finally regained its lead in Japan after floundering to the PS Vita and PS4 when the latter launched in February.

The 3DS sold 42,647 units this week while the PS Vita managed to sell 25,606 units. The PS4, despite having a new release this week with Child of Light, has seemingly remained static in its sales. It sold 11,692 units in the past week while selling 12,172 units in the week prior. The PS3 is still going strong with 9,917 units sold while the Wii U manages a sobering 8,217 units.

The Wii U’s situation is likely to improve when Mario Kart 8 hits Japan late this month but we can’t help but think Nintendo wouldn’t be in such a bind if they had as many games as the 3DS on a weekly basis. What are your thoughts? Let us know below.

A year ago, it wasn’t necessarily odd to see the PlayStation Vita getting trounced by the Nintendo 3DS XL week in and week out. This was despite the Vita having a few solid releases here and there, but the launch of the PS4 in Japan this past February seems to have given new life to the handheld. It’s been succeeding over the 3DS XL for weeks now, especially from April 7th to 13th according to the latest Media Create hardware sales charts.

The Vita managed to sell 24,078 units this week, which is only slightly down from last week’s 25,017 units. The 3DS XL sold 17,291 units this week and is at second place, slightly down from last week’s 22,947 units. The PS4 was in third place with 13,034 units sold this week and sales seem to have plateaued heavily following the initial excitement.

Also, in case you were wondering, no, the release of Titanfall in Japan did not spur Xbox 360 hardware sales. The console managed 229 units sold last week and considering Microsoft’s presence in Japan, it’s hardly surprising.

The cumulative 3DS sales tell a different story though.

Since the launch of the PlayStation 4 in Japan, the company’s PlayStation Vita handheld has seen increased sales. Of course, with the latest Media Create hardware sales charts for March 17th to 23rd, the gap between the PS4 and 3DS XL has been vastly reduced and it’s still somewhat of a close battle.

That doesn’t mean the Vita didn’t win out though – it sold 35,374 units in the past week, most likely thanks to the release of J Stars Victory VS while the PS4 managed to sell 30,201 units. The 3DS XL managed 28,291 units this past week, up by a good 6K units from the prior week and likely due to the release of Mario Party: Island Tour. If you take into account the 11,985 units of 3DS hardware sold, then Nintendo’s handheld stands tall in this past week’s charts.

Meanwhile, the PS3 sold 15,455 units with its only major new release being Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes. What are your thoughts on the console wars in Japan? Let us know below.
