With this feature, we will be taking a look at 20 of the biggest open-world survival games that you should definitely try out.

The open-world genre is one of the most popular ones in the medium of games, and we have been seeing plenty of developers blending that with survival elements in new and interesting ways. The last few years have seen many open-world games with survival elements, and here are 20 such games that you should definitely try.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl

Developer GSC Game World brought the S.T.A.L.K.E.R series back into the limelight with the recently released Heart of Chornobyl, which undoubtedly represents the peak of the series. It takes what worked in prior entries, and creates something that’s bigger and better in almost every way. It blends a modern gameplay framework with the brutal survival mechanics of past entries, and that culminates in an experience that’s sure to stay with you long after the credits roll.

These games prove that misery truly loves company.

Ah, the act of surviving together. There’s nothing better than foraging, creating a base together and building a thriving community…before it all comes apart from death, disease or zombies. Even with all the terrible things that can happen, survival games are still immensely popular and have some of the most dedicated fan bases out there. Let’s take a look at 15 of the best survival games worth playing in co-op.

Don’t Starve Together

Expanding upon Klei Entertainment’s excellent survival experience, Don’t Starve Together is more than just the base game with co-op mechanics. It offers three modes – Survival, which turns dead players into ghosts that drain the sanity of the living; Wilderness, which puts each player in a random location; and Endless, where players can respawn endlessly. With its plethora of content – from DLC like Reign of Giants, Shipwrecked and Hamlet to new characters and free updates – Don’t Starve Together remains one of the premiere multiplayer survival experiences.

Never underestimate the power of Star Wars. According to Gfk Chart-Track, LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the latest in TT Games’ LEGO series, has debuted in first place for game sales in the UK. This makes it the fourth biggest launch in the LEGO franchise (LEGO Indian Jones, LEGO Marvel Super Heroes and LEGO Batman have it beat).

FIFA 16 is at second place followed by Overwatch in third and DOOM in fourth place. Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End is in fifth place while Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness makes its debut at sixth place. Rocket League and Grand Theft Auto 5 are in seventh and eighth place respectively.

Survival horror game 7 Days to Die debuted on July 1st in Europe for consoles courtesy of Telltale Games and managed to enter ninth place. Meanwhile, Tom Clancy’s The Division stays in tenth with the recent Underground DLC not appearing to have much impact on its sales.

Telltale Games doing something a bit different with this game.

Well known for titles like The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones, Telltale Games is going to publish a slightly different genre with the upcoming release of 7 Days to Die, a game developed by The Fun Pimps. This new survival sandbox game is now slated to land on the PS4 and Xbox One in June.

7 Days to Die has a ton of aspects as other survival horror games but it also has some features that are best recognized in tower defense titles. There are also RPG elements as well as crafting, looting, mining and world building.

The game was once a Kickstarter success way back in 2013 and it’s been on early access for Steam for a while now. It will be going live on the Xbox One and PS4 digitally and physically for the price tag of $29.99 on June 28th. Check out the developer’s diary below and let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.

The hit PC exclusive zombie survival MMO game, 7 Days To Die, will be finally coming to consoles- and it will be published on consoles by none other than Telltale, the studio that brought us excellent modern adventure games such as The Walking Dead, The Wolf Among Us, Game of Thrones, Minecraft: Story Mode, and Tales from the Borderlands.

The console version of the game will include a new multiplayer mode that supports split-screen play, plus additional online multiplayer modes. Pre-ordering the console version of 7 Days to Die will unlock five character skins from Telltale’s The Walking Dead series of games, including Michonne and Lee, so there seem to be some pretty good incentives to get it early, too.

7 Days to Die will be launching on in June, on Xbox One and PS4. It will only cost $30. You can check out the brand new trailer for this game for yourself below.

Despite it’s first release on the above mentioned date, the game is still only in its alpha state, not even having reached Beta yet. The game was also successfully greenlit after a 16 day period during which it gained over 56,000 votes.

The world has been reduced to rubble and ruin in the wake of a near future third world war. Something, nobody knows what, has caused the dead to reanimate and once again walk the earth acting with a hive mind mentality.
The player takes control of a survivor of the catastrophe living in Navezgane County, Arizona.

7 Days to Die will eventually spawn the player into a randomly generated word inhabited by the undead with the sole objective of survival in mind. This can be accomplished through a variety of means but key to your survival is adhering to the games structure of exploration, location defence and zombie slaying.

As time passes in the game world, the types of zombie that you encounter will grow stronger and more vicious in nature. To counter this, the player is given access to a suit of crafting abilities that allows the creation of defences and weapons. Caution must be taken when creating housing for your character however, the voxel based world has rudimentary physics that requires buildings to have the proper supports or else it will collapse.

Surviving the night isn’t the players only struggle though. The player needs to constantly feed their character and drink a steady supply of water, lest they die of thirst or starvation. This, coupled with weapon and equipment degradation adds to the threat.

Players can engage in multiplayer through player hosted servers, this allows them to create and interact with other player worlds. The currently supported modes of play are Horde, Survival and Creative.

The game won’t feature characters in the typical sense. The players character is a blank slate. There is however NPC’s in the game world, this is how the player will gain access to most of the games quests.

Note: This wiki will be updated once we have more information about the game.

If you like killing zombies and fighting the hordes of undead, then 2014 may just be the perfect year for you.

Gamers have an obsession, that obsession seems to be the undead. It’s this very odd paradigm, because we don’t actually love them, what we love about them is that they’re just so damned fun to kill. Well, 2014 isn’t going to be much different than the last few years. There are plenty of new games full of zombies and the undead for you to slay, some games may not be what you expect, while others you may have patiently been following for months or even longer.

If you love zombies, or more to the point, you love blowing them into itty-bitty pieces to stop the infection in it’s tracks then chances are our list below will have at least one game you’re interested in. If not, maybe you’re finally all zombied-out? That’s just crazy though, you’ll never get sick of killing zombies. Never.

Dying Light:

Techland, the developers of Dead Island are at it again and bringing us another zombie game. From the looks of it though, this game is sharing very little with it’s Pacific surrounded, older brother Dead Island. Dying Light is very much more of a twitch, action survival game. Players will be expected to be able to navigate and maneuver fluidly through all sorts of different urban terrain, utilizing the character’s freerun ability.

There is a twist with this one too. Once the sun goes down, it would be highly recommended that you stay off the street. What are normally slow moving, shambling shells of their former living selves in the daylight, become ravenous, violent and flesh crazed monsters at night. Of course, it won’t be that simple or else it wouldn’t be much of a game if you could just stay inside. While Dead Island had zombie fans on both side of the fence, who either loved or hated the game, it looks like Dying Light is going to be a bit more of a crowd-pleaser. With an emphasis on action, survival and flexible mobility, this just may be the zombie game you’ve been waiting for.
