Michael Bay would indeed be proud.

Sunset Overdrive developer Insomniac Games has revealed that despite the fact that they had their game running at 1080p while developing it, they opted to decrease the game’s resolution so that they could pack more of their insane action onto the screen.

For those of you have seen Sunset Overdrive, you already know how much content and activity is stuffed into the game world, so when quizzed on why they chose to aim for 900p, creative director Marcus Smith said “”Why would you want less action on screen? That’s insanity. 900p works perfect for us. We spent a lot of time comparing and contrasting.

“We had it running at 1080p, we’d play it; we had it running at 900p, we’d play it and they didn’t look considerably different. But the things that you could draw on screen were a lot more, and we wanted to draw a lot more on screen. More action, more better. Michael Bay would be very proud.”

But what do you make of that? Is a resolution cut worth if you get more bang for your buck? Personally, I say hell yes it is.

Reportedly Insomniac's biggest game yet.

Insomniac Games president Ted Price has revealed to IGN that the studio’s upcoming Xbox One exclusive Sunset Overdrive will run at 900p resolution and 30 FPS.

According to Price, “What happened for developers not using the Kinect is that there was a slight boost in CPU power that we got to take advantage of. This game really does push the limits when it comes to the number of enemies on screen, so it was useful for us to have more CPU juice to help with physics, navigation and AI.

“We’re running at 900p and 30 fps native. This is a game with a lot on the screen and we made the choice to be at 900p because we wanted to push the level of detail, action, the size of the city and the views you can experience as move around. What’s great about Sunset Overdrive is if you can see it, you can go there.”

He also stated that Sunset Overdrive is the biggest game the studio has ever created. “You can continue playing after the end of the game and we don’t imagine people will unlock everything the first time through.”

Sunset Overdrive releases on October 28th in North America and October 31st in Europe. What are your thoughts on the game’s resolution? Let us know below.

The Xbox One version's resolution will be increased from 900p to 1080p.

Blizzard Entertainment has announced that Diablo 3: Ultimate Evil Edition will be running at 1080p and 60 FPS when it launches thanks to a day one patch. This will bring the game up to the PS4’s standard, which was announced to run at 1080p when the Xbox One version was revealed to be running at 900p.

Blizzard associate producer Tiffany Wat stated to GameSpot that, “The game will be available [in] 1080p on both the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One. Native 1080p resolution. You will need to download the day-one patch for the Xbox One to get that support, but it will be there. We’re very happy about that.”

Diablo 3: Ultimate Evil Edition will be out on August 19th for the PS4 and Xbox One and it will include the original game along with the Reaper of Souls expansion. The game is currently available for the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. Will you be purchasing the game later this month? Let us know in the comments.

Trials Fusion lead designer Karri Kiviluoma states that the difference in resolution between the PS4 and Xbox One versions of Trials Fusion is hard to notice.

For all that’s been said about the Xbox One and its eSRAM, especially with regards to the console being unable to hit 1080p resolutions for many of its games, there’s no denying that’s still relatively early in the console cycle. The performance of the console will continue to improve and some developers like RedLynx will be optimizing their games down the line, according to Trials Fusion lead designer Karri Kiviluoma.

In conversation with GamingBolt, Kiviluoma explains that it will be hard to notice the 900p resolution for Trials Fusion on the Xbox One compared to the PS4 version’s 1080p resolution. “The Xbox One and PS4 launch versions are very close to each other in visual quality, both games running at a locked 60 frames per second. It’s hardly something anyone will notice as the game in action looks amazing on whatever your platform of choice is. It’s more about having fun at 60fps than small differences between systems.”

Kiviluoma also said that the Xbox One’s resolution issue will “absolutely” and not only for their game. “They [Microsoft] absolutely will, and not just for our game. Microsoft will continue to improve performance and we will continue to optimize our game for it and the other platforms.”

Crytek has already talked about utilizing the Xbox One’s eSRAM to attain better tiled streaming and saving on bandwidth. Maybe there are benefits to the console’s architecture we’re yet to see? Let us know what you think in the comments below. In the meantime check out our full review of Trials Fusion here.

This is just a snippet of our interview with RedLynx and we will have more in the coming days.

PJ Estevez sounds off of the resolution controversies plaguing Ryse.

Next gen console releases with “only” 720p resolution are currently under fire these days, and though Crytek’s Ryse: Son or Rome goes up to 900p, it’s still not enough to satisfy cries for full HD graphics. That being said, there are a ton of other issues Ryse is working to overcome en-route to its release. Game design director PJ Estevez recently spoke to OXM about the same.

Did Crytek manage a successful balance between the gameplay, resolution and frame rate? “Definitely. I mean honestly, the truth is, it doesn’t matter what generation you’re developing for, you’ll always have constraints. And I think, you know, the thing we were fortunate about is we had a great partner in Microsoft in getting the hardware, and kind of really digging into it, and having a back and forth dialogue.

“I think Cevat released some technical reasons why we did the things that we did, but I mean, when it comes down to it, every project has their own cross to bear, and you’ve got to figure out what you want to do and what’s the best way to use the tech.

“We were really fortunate, we had a great partner, so whatever curve balls we had, we saw them coming well before they actually hit us. We kind of joke that it’s like landing a plane on the runway as you’re going down and your engine is on fire and the fuselage has holes in it and stuff like that.”

Hopefully it doesn’t turn out to be an apt analogy when Ryse: Son of Rome launches for the Xbox One on November 22nd.

Aaron Greenberg clarifies Ryse's native resolution.

Another one bites the dust? Chief of Staff for Devices and Studios Group at Microsoft Aaron Greenberg answered a fan query recently about whether all Xbox One titles would be in native 1080p and revealed that Crytek’s Ryse: Son of Rome would be running at this resolution.

However, Greenberg later clarified, stating that Ryse would be running at 900p while up-scaling to 1080p.

@deaconblade Update from team, Forza 5 is native @1080p, Ryse is native @900p, but Xbox One upscales all titles to 1080p & they look amazing

— Aaron Greenberg (@aarongreenberg) September 17, 2013

This seems to also fit in with Double Helix Games, which stated that Killer Instinct technically runs at 720p, which indicates that it could upscale to 1080p.

A mishandled message or just a lack of information on Greenberg’s part? We’ll go with the later but it’s interesting that he took the chance to clarify it immediately rather than waiting for some one to contradict him later.

The number of native 1080p titles on Xbox One seems to be dropping, with Forza Motorsport 5 thus still confirmed at 1080p. Stay tuned for more as the Xbox One launches on November 22nd worldwide.
