Guard Crush's acclaimed beat 'em up finally arrives for Xbox, but you can also look forward to Disco Elysium and The Long Dark.

The second wave of Game Pass for March has been revealed, and in case you thought Microsoft couldn’t top the addition of Cyberpunk 2077, think again. It kicks off on March 18th with South of Midnight and The Alters becoming available on Game Pass Premium for cloud, console and PC players. Things quickly escalate on March 19th with the arrival of Disco Elysium: The Final Cut for all three tiers.

On March 24th, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth will finally be added to the service for Ultimate, Premium and PC subscribers. Guard Crush Games’ Absolum follows on March 25th, which also marks the acclaimed rogue-lite beat ’em up’s debut on Xbox Series X/S.

Nova Roma, a city-building title from Lion Shield, will premiere in Game Preview for Ultimate and PC Game Pass subscribers, coinciding with its early access release. Survival crafting fans can look forward to The Long Dark becoming available on March 30th for Premium, PC, and Ultimate. Finally, Resident Evil 7: biohazard will be playable on March 31st, joining the Resident Evil Village.

But wait, there’s more. Barbie Horse Trails kicks off next month alongside Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, the latter finally available to Premium subscribers. If that wasn’t enough, Square Enix’s march to include every single mainline Final Fantasy title on Game Pass seemingly continues with Final Fantasy 4 on April 7th.

Surprisingly, only two games will be leaving the service on March 31st. Check them out below:

Peppa Pig World Adventures (Cloud, Console, PC)

Mad Streets (Cloud, Console, PC)

If you're looking for your next big PC title, we've lined up some of this year's best ones for you to check out. Each one of them's a winner, and definitely worth a shot.

It’s been a good year for PC games, with some great experiences hitting the shelves. However, as is the case every year, some of them have been better than the others, managing to stand out enough to gain the notice of the community at large.

We’ve played them all, and picked our favorites to give you a few choices for the holidays and beyond as we wait for a new batch of great games from 2026. As it stands, our nominees for the best PC games of 2025 are:

1. INAZUMA ELEVEN: Victory Road

Intense football RPG action with a layer of anime polish can be quite appealing to either an anime or a football fan, but this one is more than that. It offers an almost endless amount of playable content thanks to a massive roster of characters, and a lot of replay value thanks to its single and multiplayer modes. There’s a lot to enjoy here, and a very rewarding journey along the way.

2. Dispatch

Joining Robert Robinson III on this charming and often hilarious take on superheroes is sure to have you very invested in its story and mechanics right off the bat. Dispatch hits all the right notes and brings a charming cast to the stage, while a riveting narrative weaves their lives together with the SDN acting as a binding thread. It captures your attention and manages to hold it long enough for this one to become endearing.

3. Hades 2

We always knew the long wait for this one was going to be worth it. Hades 2 is an absolute blast with its roguelike action-RPG gameplay loop, blending very well with its story and unique art style. Its potent combination of style, substance, and satire is sublime, while the combat does come with enough challenge to keep you on your toes. Look no further than this one for hours of quality fun.

4. The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered

If you haven’t gotten around to this one after playing the first game, or perhaps coming to the franchise after the live-action shows, this one is definitely going to have you invested. The remaster does a brilliant job of improving on the strengths of the original release, making it the best possible way to experience the adventure that awaits. For those of you already familiar with how it all ends, another playthrough is always on the cards anyway.

5. Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter

Every hour you sink into this action-packed JRPG is going to be worth it, with its story, characters, combat, and general allure drawing you in and leaving you with so much to do in its world. It’s also very replayable, which is a great way to keep the story going and your characters’ stories playing out on increasingly harder difficulties. This one does its genre justice and is a world that calls to you at every turn.

6. Absolum

With a combat system worthy of a chef’s kiss, accompanied by a roguelike gameplay loop that’s very addictive indeed, Talamh is a place you might find pretty hard to leave. The battle against the Crimson Order and Azra is the perfect excuse for some good old beat ‘em up action, and this one is excellent on that front. Between all the character archetypes on offer, it’s probably going to keep you busy for a while.

7. Clair Obscur Expedition

This one’s already winning quite a few awards and nominations, and with good reason. The Continent and Expedition’s beloved cast of characters are reason enough to fall in love with The Paintress’s world. But all of the adversity and loss they have overcome have you invested in the entire journey. It’s almost as if you’re a part of the expedition too, and the one who decides its fate. It’s an experience that comes along every once in a while to show you what a great game can do.

8. Hollow Knight: Silksong

This one’s release was among the year’s most pleasant surprises, and taking over a new adventure as Hornet was an absolute treat. The combat was familiar yet fresh, while the explorable world’s size and scope were overwhelming at first, and simply delightful as we kept losing ourselves in its confines. Add a very enticing art style and excellent level designs, and you’ve got yourself a winner.

9. Blue Prince

This is among the more unique ones on this list. Helping Simon secure his inheritance of the Mt. Holly Estate might not be the most action-packed game on this list, but it certainly stretches your mental faculties in your quest to locate the mansion’s hidden room. No two days are alike, and you’re soon going to be thinking about this one even when you’re not in your gaming chair.

10. Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2

Oh, what an RPG this one turned out to be. With a massive map full of quirky folks, mysteries, intrigue, and some good old adventures to be had along the road, it was a sequel that stayed true to its roots while building out the franchise in a number of meaningful ways. The story is top-shelf, while an abundance of things to do is going to keep you quite busy as you play it all.

11. ARC Raiders

This extraction shooter has been among the few games we’ve visited almost daily, not because we had to, but because we wanted to. It’s been the perfect choice for a quick session where we kick back, and set out to meet other players in a world where the community has now made identifying friends from foes a part of the fun. Its design lends itself to the chaos that such decisions can cause, and you’re going to have a lot of unpredictably fun moments with this one.

12. Assassin’s Creed Shadows

With a perfect blend of the samurai and shinobi’s ways, and a massive recreation of feudal Japan to let those two archetypes loose in, Shadows is a great addition to the Assassin’s Creed franchise. Naoe and Yasuke are great characters, their skillsets lending themselves to some very interesting ways to achieve your goals. A stunning world and protagonists whose blades could strike from the shadows or the light is certainly an adventure worth having.

13. Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth

Cloud Strife’s fight against the Shinra is the perfect backdrop for an explosive story, combined with some incredible gameplay mechanics that make this one’s long-awaited PC version worth playing even if you’re not a fan of Final Fantasy. We’d recommend hooking up a DualSense to your PC for this one to get the most out of its haptic integration, while enjoying all of the visual bells and whistles that it has to offer. It’s the best of both worlds, really.

14. Monster Hunter Wilds

Beautiful biomes, a wide variety of impeccably designed monsters to hunt, and a plethora of quests to keep you travelling across the Forbidden Lands make this one a fine choice for those of you looking for a meaty RPG. Excellent build variety and deep combat mechanics, along with a charming world full of things to pique your curiosity, are more reasons to jump in and enjoy yourself thoroughly.

15. Lumines Arise

Simple mechanics can often lead to complex gameplay loops, and Lumines Ares is a great example of that. No two rounds of this puzzle game are the same, and it takes the concept of Tetris to a whole new level with a very unique visual design and audio design that weaves itself into the game’s DNA quite creatively. This one’s impressive and addictive, which is quite a potent combo.

16. Battlefield 6

Among the year’s best looking shooters, Battlefield 6 might have drawn a bit of flak for its campaign, but that does not take away from the fact that its shooting mechanics are very much on point. If you’re looking for a multiplayer shooter that shows off what your PC can do while also being a great option for those extended gaming sessions, this one has everything you need and more.

17. The Alters

If a game that has you creating alternate versions of yourself to progress further in its story sounds cool to you, you’re in luck. Jan Dolski’s story might seem quirky on the surface, but there’s a surprising amount of depth on offer here, and your choices carry a lot of weight in the bargain. This one’s among the most creative titles we’ve played this year, and is going to remain among the most unique ones we’ve encountered over the years.

18. The First Berserker: Khazan

Khazan’s revenge-fuelled rampage is a stylish, well-designed game that puts its combat front and center and challenges you to play it on its terms before it gives you the satisfaction you crave from a title of its calibre. With an interesting story and characters backing up the action, along with a distinct visual style to sell it all, this one is going to have you white knuckled as you take on its many threats.

19. Bionic Bay

Atmospheric, immersive, and mentally challenging, Bionic Bay makes excellent use of a solid premise to give you an experience that’s going to have you wanting more. It’s a test of your patience just as much as it’s a test of your ability to get creative with solutions to the problem in front of you. It’s exhilarating when you get it right, while the way it all comes together is a reward on its own with this one.

20. Jurassic World Evolution 3

With Jeff Goldblum coming back to the fold as Dr. Ian Malcolm, and a very encouraging approach to setting you up for success as you manage your dinosaurs and facilities, this one gets you locked in pretty quickly. We still go back to our parks for some routine maintenance from time to time, watching the dinosaurs we’ve helped bring to life thrive. It’s quite relaxing and a lot of fun until Extinction Now rears its ugly head.

And there you have it. These are the PC games from 2025 we think deserve your attention. But there has to be a winner, right? We’ve an inkling you already know what’s coming.

The winner of the best PC game in 2025 is

Clair Obscur: Expedition

Clair Obscur: Expedition , a game that has surpassed expectations and goes above and beyond to enthrall its players.

Its visual style lends it realism while leaving room for artistic flourishes. Its cast of characters sells its material so well that you find yourself even rooting for its antagonist. You’re going to be humming its soundtrack and maybe even listening to it in the gym. Its story is going to take you to places you might not be ready to visit. Its combat might fool you into thinking it’s an easy experience with no challenge involved. In short, it’s everything a great game should be, and is one that’s going to remain close to our hearts in the years to come.

And that’s a wrap on the best PC games of 2025! We’re looking forward to doing it all over again next year, and to keep bringing more of gaming’s best to your screens.

Take on tougher challenges or venture into corrupted regions to accrue better rewards when the free update arrives next year.

After teasing the same back in October, Guard Crush Games and Dotemu have revealed the new content coming to fantasy beat ’em up Absolum. Due in Early 2026, update 1.1 adds Mystic Ordeals, which offer unique challenges to future runs after clearing the final boss.

These include Scavenger Ordeal, where end-of-level rewards are disabled, but enemies still drop items. While other Ordeals haven’t been detailed, it’s possible to create Custom Ordeals and share them with other players.

There are also corrupted regions which boast more challenging enemies (and better rewards). Mystic Ordeals will influence how frequently these appear, but if you want to corrupt the whole world, go for it. It poses the “ultimate challenge” while still promising an “ultimate number of rewards.”

You can also look forward to Elite Mounts, stronger versions of the current mounts with more powerful attacks, and new skins. The characters will also receive new emotes with unique voice lines.

Stay tuned for more details on the update when it rolls out next month. Absolum is available for PS4, PS5, PC, and Nintendo Switch. Check out our review here.

With such a packed year of acclaimed video game releases, which one will run away with the most coveted award of the season?

It’s about as natural for some titles to be nominated for Game of the Year as it is a cold day in you-know-where for others. However, this year, the nominees for the highest honors in gaming are of such high caliber that it’s almost ridiculous. It’s nearly as unprecedented as 2023, which is something that none of us would have thought when it started. So why not discuss each game’s chances heading into awards season?

Just to clarify, though: This isn’t a precursor to our own Game of the Year Awards or any sort of hint at what could win. Any title at this point is still fair game. We’re just discussing all the major contenders and their chances of winning across the industry as a whole. With that said, there is one that many consider to be a shoo-in for The Game Awards, if nothing else – Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.

And how could it not be? It was the highest-rated new game among critics for months at a time – and no, those Switch 2 versions of Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom don’t count. For many gamers, it’s an experience that’s near and dear to their hearts in terms of narrative and characters; a success story that we hadn’t seen in a while from a group of developers who separated from a big triple-A publisher to pursue their creative vision.

Some loved exploring its Belle Époque world and taking in the stunning art direction. Others relished in its combat challenges, even though it was easy to over-level and unlock some truly broken builds by the end. Many found it to be the contemporary Final Fantasy that they’ve always wanted. Others, like me, felt like it set a new bar for $50 releases while sending a message to the utter messes that dared charge even $70.

It’s no surprise then that it would sweep the Golden Joystick Awards, winning Best Storytelling, Visual Design, Soundtrack, Supporting Performer, Lead Performer and Studio of the Year before nabbing the Ultimate Game of the Year prize. With 12 nominations at The Game Awards, the most in the show’s history, it’s a clear favorite to pull a Return of the King and dominate this awards season.

The only real competitor that truly comes to mind at this stage is Death Stranding 2: On the Beach. Granted, when the first game was released, its unorthodox gameplay, bizarre narrative and strong performances were enough for multiple nominations but only a few wins. Blame it on the inherent friction of the design, or whatever or just the fact that it was unlucky to release in the same year as Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. Either way, it was a dark horse.

Not so with the sequel. It’s among the highest-rated new titles of the year, and the second-highest-rated among exclusives. It redefined visual standards for the generation with its gorgeous landscapes and impeccable character models. And while it’s always a toss-up how the story could turn out, Kojima Productions surprised us with some genuinely emotional hits on top of the usual twists, expanding on Sam’s story in so many welcome ways.

That’s before even getting to the gameplay, which accommodated so many other styles of play, resulting in a much more enjoyable experience. Long story short, it’s not just the prestige of Hideo Kojima’s name – Death Stranding 2 stands as a strong, well-rounded experience. No wonder then that it’s tied with another exclusive for the second-most nominations at The Game Awards, but we’ll get to that.

Instead, now would be a good time to talk about the truly beloved darlings that more than deserve to be in the Game of the Year discussion, but who are unlikely to win the big one. Blue Prince, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, Split Fiction – it’s a shame because each of these games is incredible in what they do, be it in KCD 2’s world design and sheer immersion, or Split Fiction’s range of gameplay experiences within its co-op framework. And then there’s Blue Prince – a truly innovative take on the puzzle genre with enough mysteries to keep players running around, even after hundreds of hours. If any of these games had been released last year, they may have taken the crown, but 2025 is too packed.

Unfortunately, that may also apply to Ghost of Yōtei. Now, I loved Ghost of Tsushima to bits, flaws and all. To say that I had high expectations for Yōtei, even before it was announced, would be an understatement. And yet, it surpassed almost every single one of them. The combat, exploration, visuals, overall presentation and narrative – it all felt personable and pitch-perfect. So while it’s yet another title that I could see earning numerous awards for its soundtrack, performances, visuals, and whatnot, Game of the Year may be out of its reach.

The same goes for Hollow Knight: Silksong. Years and years of anticipation punctuated by endless memes of “Where Silksong?!” during showcases resulted in one of the greatest side-scrolling action-adventure games ever made. Heck, it’s perhaps the only title that managed to crash nearly every major storefront as soon as it launched. But while many were enthralled by Pharloom and its multitude of secrets on top of the unforgiving bosses, there were a scant few who weren’t feeling the magic or the challenge. Which is a shame for many reasons that I’ve discussed before, but I can see those many moments of frustration, even if they made victory taste that much sweeter, bringing the experience down for some players.

Then we come to the wildcards like Donkey Kong Bananza. For all the talk about how Xbox hasn’t been nominated for The Game Awards’ grand prize since 2010, it’s almost as surprising that no Nintendo exclusive has won since 2017 (with Breath of the Wild understandably taking the industry by storm). As much fun as Donkey Kong Bananza is, I can see it suffering the same fate, simply because of all the other contenders on the field. That doesn’t take away from how incredible a 3D platformer it is, and it’s probably guaranteed to mop up all the Nintendo-specific awards, even with Metroid Prime 4: Beyond coming up.

Hades 2 is a dark horse in many ways, exiting early access several weeks after Silksong and delivering a fantastic evolution of the original’s formula. The ending wasn’t nearly as well-received, but as a rogue-like, it remains at the tippity top of such experiences to play. Will that be enough to elevate it above the others? Probably not, even with its stellar combat, characters, and presentation, but the fact that it’s become undeniable brings a smile to my face.

Of course, you also have games which have much lower chances of claiming a ton of awards, despite leaving their own mark. I can see AdHoc Studio’s Dispatch winning some awards for its performances and writing, but it likely won’t go much further beyond that, which is a shame considering it’s one of the best narrative adventure games in years and years. Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater is as faithful a remake as you can get, but whether it’s due to the lack of boundary-pushing or the sheer number of other contenders, it may have to be content with winning top honors for remakes.

The same goes for Silent Hill f but in the horror category. As uncomfortably disgusting yet disturbingly compelling as it is, I don’t see it getting much mainstream recognition beyond the art direction and story. And as much as I like Absolum with its mix of rogue-lite mechanics, beat ’em up action and gorgeous 2D visuals, it’s unlikely to even win out in the indie category.

Regardless of all the above games’ chances and how many awards they accrue, they’re all fantastic titles that you should experience. Which one is your favorite to claim Game of the Year? Sound off in the comments and let us know.

With so many great releases this year, the PS5's list of must-play titles grows ever larger. Check out the very best of the best here.

Five years since the PlayStation 5 first launched, and yet, it feels like yesterday with the global shortages and massive amounts of hype. When you recount the sheer number of incredible titles that have been released for the console ever since, however, the amount of unforgettable experiences starts to stack up. Let’s take a look at the top 30 best PS5 games of all time, starting with…

30. Until Dawn Remake

As good as the original? Well, no, especially when it comes to the soundtrack selection for certain scenes, specific lighting changes in the beginning, etc. However, Until Dawn’s remake does offer vastly superior performance and character models alongside new content and death animations. Maybe, just maybe, it’ll encourage someone to experience the original and see first-hand why it’s superior. For now, at least it’s better than the movie (not that that’s a high bar to clear).

29. Rise of the Rōnin

Unfairly compared to Ghost of Tsushima when it first launched, Team Ninja’s open-world action-adventure has its share of bright spots despite the story shortcomings. Combat is top-notch, as expected from the Nioh team, and hey, you can use a bayonet as a hybrid melee/ranged weapon, which is really cool. It may not quite have the budget, but you can’t deny Rise of the Rōnin’s ambition, especially with the sheer number of factions, branching paths, and combat depth.

28. Sackboy: A Big Adventure

LittleBigPlanet may be on ice for who knows how long, but Sackboy: A Big Adventure did help fill that void. The vaster movesets, coupled with returning tools like the grappling hook, made for an endearing adventure, especially when playing with a friend. While it didn’t necessarily break new ground in the genre, it was still a joyful romp through Craftworld.

27. The Nioh Collection

Two excellent titles in one package alongside all their paid DLC and updates for hundreds of hours of masocore action RPG fun – what more could you want? Well, maybe a reprieve from the difficulty. However, The Nioh Collection is a sheer testament to Team Ninja’s post-Ninja Gaiden design, blending that combo potential with Souls-like fundamentals and more grounded action, even if the loot chase isn’t for everyone.

26. Mafia: The Old Country

We never really got all our answers about how Mafia: The Old Country ties into the rest of the series (save for it being a prequel and containing a few cameos). Nevertheless, it was a strong return to everything that made the franchise so memorable, from the gripping narrative and strong characterization to the deeply involving themes. That Sicily looked so stunning to explore is also a plus.

25. Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered

Jokes about remastering a title that wasn’t even a decade old aside, Guerrilla Games poured a significant amount of time and resources into revamping Horizon Zero Dawn for the remaster. Environments were changed, matching Forbidden West in terms of graphical quality, and entire cutscenes were overhauled and improved thanks to re-recorded dialogue. Otherwise, its gameplay fundamentals are as enjoyable as ever.

24. Demon’s Souls Remake

Aggravating as it is that Bluepoint was relegated to making a live-service title for all these years, at least we got the long-requested remake of Demon’s Souls. Purists may scoff at some of the visual choices and their effect on the atmosphere. And yet this remake brings the FromSoftware title into the contemporary age, idiosyncrasies and all, proving that some classics truly are timeless.

23. Sword of the Sea

Fancy hovering around some stunning environments on a hoversword, trying to piece together the sordid history of the place within three hours? Sword of the Sea may satisfy that urge…or leave you confused afterwards. Regardless, it’s a seamless blend of snowboarding, surfing, and platforming with deft pacing and more than a few surprises.

22. Returnal

From arcade shooters that it claimed wouldn’t sell to delivering one of the most pulse-pounding third-person action games of all time, Housemarque has had quite the journey. Returnal is a heck of a stop on the way, with Atropos presenting environments that are as brutalising as they are lovingly surreal. Its take on the rogue-like formula may not be for everyone, but when it comes to fast-paced action and bullet hell mechanics, few games can top it.

21. Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart

Showcasing the sheer speed of the PS5’s SSD, Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart’s clever usage of rifts allowed for a dimension-hopping adventure the likes of which the series had never seen. But even if you ignore the technical wizardry, it’s just a stellar platformer all-around with its traversal mechanics, combat, and the sheer charm of its leading duo.

20. Helldivers 2

The sole success of Sony’s live-service initiative, and it’s easy to see why. Arriving almost out of nowhere to deliver explosive co-op action that’s easy to get into and impossible to put down, Helldivers 2 has grown into a behemoth of weapons, enemies, mission types, and whatnot. It’s almost detrimental in a way, given the technical issues, but when you can run around together in Killzone and Halo armor sets, it’s beyond worth it.

19. Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2

Last year saw Microsoft finally release its first-party titles on PS5, but this year saw a once-iconic character returning to where it all began. We’re of course talking about Senua, whose first game debuted on PS4 before coming to Xbox. Suffice it to say that Senua’s Saga offers more of the same but with far more gorgeous visuals, and it works, despite the familiarity of it all.

18. Absolum

The very best in beat ’em up combat is mixed with deceptively simple upgrades and a branching world design that suits the genre as much as the storytelling. Saying it looks downright amazing would be an understatement, but it also packs in a surprisingly great soundtrack with a who’s who of composers on board. Suffice it to say that if you’re going in for more Streets of Rage 4-style goodness, Absolum will easily surpass those expectations.

17. Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater

After successfully reviving Silent Hill, it was the turn of Metal Gear Solid, that too where it all chronologically began. And while Delta: Snake Eater threw in some notable new features, from the over-the-shoulder camera to the revamped visuals and quality-of-life, it was, unabashedly, exactly like the original. Love it or hate it for that reason, it’s still a fantastic remake for one of the greatest of all time.

16. The Last of Us Part 2: Remastered

Yes, The Last of Us Part 2 isn’t technically a native PS5 title, and yes, the series’ re-releases are getting a little too excessive. On the other hand, it’s still a fantastic game with a story and twist that’s vehemently argued about to this day. The mix of survival mechanics and responsive gameplay, coupled with larger environments to explore and even more heart-pounding set pieces, all wrapped up in that signature post-apocalyptic atmosphere – it’s still a powerful combo to this day. Throw in the rogue-like No Return and other goodies, and you’ve got an even better deal.

15. Borderlands 4

It’s a good day when you can wake up, play a new Borderlands title and come away with “Not bad.” Featuring the gunplay of Borderlands 3 and none of the same narrative treatment, its main appeal is the vast world, laden with interesting activities, and more build-crafting opportunities than ever before. The looter shooter genre as a whole may seem tapped out, especially on this scale, but Borderlands 4 is still a fun time if you’re into the grind.

14. Forza Horizon 5

For years, PS5 players have heard about the brilliance of Forza Horizon 5. The extensive roster of cars (now at 900 and counting), the attention to detail of Mexico, its various jaw-dropping locations, and the sheer amount of content to experience. But for all its intricacies, systems, and realistic physics (if that’s what you’re into), Playground Games’ open-world racer is just the perfect fantasy for any car enthusiast to let loose.

13. Gran Turismo 7

The most drop-dead, stunning game in Polyphony Digital’s long, illustrious history and also the most controversial. But has that stopped Gran Turismo 7 from delivering the very best racing sim action this generation (especially after Forza Motorsport fumbled)? Not by a long shot, and the plethora of updates thus far, including the upcoming Spec 3 update, have made it even more worthwhile.

12. Silent Hill f

With the first hurdle of a competent remake surpassed, Konami faced its next big challenge: Delivering a new Silent Hill that was not only fun but downright terrifying. So naturally it went scorched earth by having Ryukishi07 pen the narrative and kera to design the creatures alongside a rural 1960s Japanese town as the setting. Even with complaints surrounding its combat, if there’s any horror title you need to experience this year, it’s Silent Hill f.

11. Days Gone Remastered

Even in the absence of a new game, you can’t keep ol’ Deacon St. John down. Finally arriving on the PS5, Days Gone Remastered offers everything that fans loved about the original with visual improvements and faster loading times. Permadeath and Speedrun modes provide fresh new challenges, while the brand new Horde Assault puts an arcade spin on surviving against an overwhelming amount of Freakers, complete with its own progression.

10. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2

Bigger, better and somehow offering the same runtime, Insomniac’s sequel puts a somewhat darker twist on Peter Parker’s journey as Spider-Man. In reality, it expands on the original in some truly spectacular ways, from the varied playstyles to the customization and plethora of suits. Plus, Manhattan, alongside Brooklyn and Queens, has never looked better or flowed as seamlessly as you web sling through them at breakneck speeds.

9. Astro Bot

A pitch-perfect platformer with a presentation that’s equal parts stunning and endearing, packed with the best that the genre has to offer in terms of levels and mechanics…all without any fluff, and paying tribute to PlayStation’s extensive history? That somewhat describes Team Asobi’s Astro Bot in a nutshell, but you could also just call it a masterpiece. It may not boast the same scale as many of Sony’s other heavy hitters, but its heart is unmatched, making for an exclusive that everyone should play. However, at the very top of the PS5 mountain sits…

8. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

That Sandfall Interactive’s first title could launch this year and catapult up the list of must-play games of all time is a testament to its brilliance. And make no mistake – Clair Obscur is brilliant in every single way that should matter in a role-playing game, full of wondrous locales to explore, an involving story with memorable characters, a fantastic combat system that mixes turn-based and real-time actions to excellent effect, and the music. Oh, the music. If you haven’t experienced it already, then what are you waiting for?

7. God of War Ragnarok

Sony’s Santa Monica Studio is no stranger to going all out when it’s time to end a story, and Ragnarok is no exception. Themes of family, betrayal, belonging, and more are tackled; vast lands teeming with dangerous new threats are revealed; and the sheer amount of combos that you can potentially pull off is even more insane than ever. Ragnarok is the studio’s magnum opus, and the fact that it added an entire rogue-lite expansion, Valhalla, on top as an epilogue for free only further sweetens the deal.

6. Black Myth: Wukong

It’s not often that something so unbelievably gorgeous delivers on its mountain of expectations, but Black Myth: Wukong made it look easy. The stunning art direction and presentation are backed by an equally involving combat system and some of the coolest boss battles in a video game. Wukong is more than just a great action RPG, though – it’s also a testament to the sheer game development talent in China.

5. Horizon Forbidden West: Complete Edition

Let it not be said that Guerrilla Games didn’t follow the rule of “more” with Horizon Forbidden West. More Machines, weapon types, armor sets, activities, side quests, fidelity, characters, locations – the list goes on (and Horizon Zero Dawn isn’t a small game). Amid all this, it even offered some shocking revelations, not to mention a much-requested boss fight in the expansion, Burning Shores. It’s been almost four years since its release, but Horizon Forbidden West remains an addictive open-world experience.

4. Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth

Venturing beyond the confines of Midgar didn’t just mean experiencing the broader world of Final Fantasy 7 as a whole – it also meant a completely new approach to exploration. More mini-games and optional activities, not to mention side quests where key party members took the lead to go with additional challenging bosses, all wrapped up in an open world format. And that’s not even getting into all the improvements with the combat, summons, and the sheer insanity of the story. Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth gets some flak for certain sequences going too long, but for long-time fans and RPG enthusiasts alike, it’s simply breathtaking in almost every way.

3. Elden Ring + Shadow of the Erdtree

You probably saw this coming, but like a certain Scarlet Rotted Blade, Elden Ring and its expansion, Shadow of the Erdtree, simply won’t know defeat. Are there areas where it falters, especially in performance? Absolutely, but for us, it’s such a masterclass in open-world design and action RPG combat. That first moment where you step out and gaze upon Limgrave; that moment where Stormveil Castle is conquered and you look out upon the deeper world; the first nightmarish moments of Caelid; and who can forget wandering into the Land of Shadow and getting uppies from the Furnace Golem? Elden Ring wears its influences – from Breath of the Wild to Dark Souls – on its sleeve, and delivers a magical journey that few other games have managed to surpass.

2. Ghost of Yōtei

Plenty of revenge sagas ask how far you’d go, but Ghost of Yōtei offered a slightly different twist, which led to a more layered narrative. Of course, it also took everything about Ghost of Tsushima and elevated it to whole new levels, whether it was the natural flow of its open world, the sheer variety in activities, or the responsive combat. Overall, a fantastic title and more than a worthy follow-up to its 2020 predecessor.

1. Death Stranding 2: On The Beach

Much has been said about Hideo Kojima and his, let’s say, unique storytelling. However, Death Stranding 2 didn’t just up the emotional quotient while introducing various unforgettable new characters. It also made vast improvements to the original’s gameplay, accommodating those who favored stealth, going in guns blazing, or the familiar friction-filled hiking. The sheer visual fidelity is top-tier among games this generation, and it all ties together into a satisfying tear-jerker of an ending.

Guard Crush Games and Dotemu are also working on hotfixes to address the "most significant issues" plaguing the rogue-lite.

With over 200,000 copies sold in its first week and extensive critical acclaim, rogue-lite beat ’em up Absolum has seen an incredible reception. Dotemu and Guard Crush Games thanked fans for their support while revealing what’s next: A new content patch that adds something called Mystic Ordeals.

These Ordeals offer more granular control over the game’s difficulty, from boss and enemy life to enemy speed, aggression, multiplier, and more. The player’s attributes can also seemingly be modified, though these weren’t fully detailed. Of course, this is only the “tiniest glimpse” of what’s to come, so expect more details as the development team ponders “the future of Talamh and Absolum in the months (and years) to come.”

It’s also working on hotfixes for some of the “most significant issues,” though once again, an ETA remains to be announced (aside from “soon”). Stay tuned for more details in the meantime.

Absolum is available for PS4, PS5, PC, and Nintendo Switch. Check out our review here – we awarded it a nine out of ten with the combat, rogue-lite structure, build-crafting and presentation receiving top marks.

The critically acclaimed rogue-lite beat 'em up from the Streets of Rage 4 team is available for PS5, PS4, PC, and Nintendo Switch.

In a week with some heavy hitters, including Battlefield 6 and Little Nightmares 3, Dotemu’s Absolum still managed to make its mark. Following positive critical reviews, the publisher confirmed that it sold over 200,000 copies and revealed a new accolades trailer. Check it out below.

Developed by Dotemu, Guard Crush Games and Supamonks, Absolum is a beat ’em up title with support for up to two players. It offers the same refined combat that the Streets of Rage 4 team is known for, but adds rogue-lite elements and branching paths across a massive world. Each character has unique Specials and can learn new moves on top of augmenting their abilities with elemental properties.

Absolum is available for PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch and PC. Check out our review, where we gave it a nine out of ten for its stunning presentation and incredible combat. Even the rogue-lite elements meshed incredibly well with the beat ’em up core, keeping runs fresh throughout.

Dotemu's first original IP offers some of the best beat 'em up action on the market, but also scores on nearly every other front.

Getting excited for a new rogue-like/lite is challenging. The very nature of the genre – the clean slate that every new premise brings – is offset by whether that premise is even exciting to begin with, let alone remain exciting over multiple runs, or if they’ll translate into a meaningful whole, or ensure I’m actually having fun engaging with the same gameplay hook. From the outset, I didn’t really know what to make of Absolum. Fantastic demo, gorgeous visuals, stunning animation, excellent gameplay – it should have been surprising, and yet, expected coming from the team behind Streets of Rage 4 (plus production/animation studio Supamonks).

Such demos, indispensable as they are, can also send expectations down a dangerous path. I’m hooked, but how much more could the actual game offer? As it turns out, in Absolum, a lot. A shocking amount, to the degree that I’m surprised that Dotemu and Guard Crush Studios have kept the sheer scale of this so carefully under wraps. It not only offers some of the best beat ’em up combat that the genre has to offer, but a compelling branching rogue-lite with cool discoveries, build-crafting that complements the gameplay loop without completely overtaking it, fun narrative events, and a great setting with its own nuances.

"As you progress further, more details about the Cataclysm, Azra’s character, and the core cast are revealed. Without delving into spoilers, the circumstances turn out to be more complex than initially imagined."

All that said, Absolum does take time to envelop you in its world-building and lore. You play as one of the children of Uchawi, a Root Sister who helped nurture magic in the world. Unfortunately, after the Cataclysm, Azra rose to effectively enslave the world, bringing his special brand of order and oppression while outlawing magic. Following your rescue of Uchawi from imprisonment, the mission to defeat Azra and liberate the world begins, which would probably be easier without having to best his various kingly allies first. But where’s the fun in that?

As typical as the setup feels, it unfolds in an organic world connected by the greater empire that Azra has crafted, yet boiling over with its own conflicts and events. The goblins in the Grandery’s forest who insist you best their champion before seeking safe passage; the once prosperous dwarven mines, now teeming with all sorts of hazards; the swamps and jungles of Jaroba where the arena awaits – each is distinct, memorable and teeming with secrets, quests and alternate paths. Yet events in one can easily impact the others, whether it’s sea-faring pirates who offer passage to Jaroba conducting a heist in a Grandery town, or the mysterious mist in the first region, which could hold the key to finding Yeldrim. As you progress further, more details about the Cataclysm, Azra’s character, and the core cast are revealed. Without delving into spoilers, the circumstances turn out to be more complex than initially imagined.

These regions offer their fair share of unique characters, and I wish some of them had a bit more development. As you progress, completing quests can result in narrative ramifications on future playthroughs. Helping to rebuild that bridge in the Grandery may seem like a good idea at first, until the goblins scorn you later, tossing out rotten food instead of trinkets that could help on your journey. Absolum is still very well put together, to the extent that you’ll want to revisit areas to discover new things. The sheer variety of things to do, whether it’s hiring mercenaries to accompany you in the arena, or failing to notice a trap and falling into a boss battle in prison, and so on, freshens up each run in so many unique ways.

Of course, branching paths means having to prioritize certain encounters and quests over others, which can also impact your build, but for the initial hour or two, Absolum is a stunning yet fairly straightforward beat ’em up. The crew that you’ll control includes Galandra, who alternates between elbow strikes to unsheathe a greatsword; Cider, a rogue-ish fighter that likes to grapple and attack in mid-air; Karl, who relies on firearms and flaming fists; and Brome, a frog wizard who can unleash beam attacks. Each has a unique light attack, heavy attack, and Special (with an even more powerful yet limited-use Ultimate unlocking later). As you complete runs and gain resources, you can swap Specials. Galandra’s rising slash can be substituted with a Stinger-like piercing stab or a wave slash that’s also usable in mid-air, perfect when juggling fools, but that’s not all.

"It’s not all about how many elements you can stack, though. Sometimes, it’s about trapping enemies in water bubbles at the end of combos, chaining them continuously, or summoning clones all over the place while bouncing enemies into afterimages of attacks when your floating spectral sword isn’t smacking them around."

Various upgrades discovered throughout Talamh can also change up your regular attacks significantly. A knee-lift dash attack could gain the ability to grab an enemy in mid-air and slam them down. That singular Heavy slash could be used three times in a row or charged up to break through armored enemies more easily. Then you have the elemental augments, the real meat behind the build-crafting, starting with typical effects – dealing burn damage or building up static to unleash chain lightning – but it’s not long before you’re sending out tidal waves, summoning tornadoes and turning the screen into a visual mess (affectionate). Augments can also be upgraded mid-run to deal more damage, letting you further lean into something that’s working well.

It’s not all about how many elements you can stack, though. Sometimes, it’s about trapping enemies in water bubbles at the end of combos, chaining them continuously, or summoning clones all over the place while bouncing enemies into afterimages of attacks when your floating spectral sword isn’t smacking them around. Or just throwing all sorts of random nonsense at enemies a la Moon Knight because one upgrade generates throwable items on critical hits. The persistent progression, which dictates benefits like increased max health, more damage dealt by recruited companions, etc., can feel a little too straightforward for one’s liking. However, it also provides options like crafting trinkets instead of healing or increasing the likelihood of higher rarity Trinkets and higher level augments appearing.

Again, nothing too crazy, but they absolutely freshen up each run while providing meaningful power spikes, helping you inch ever closer to Azra. Instead of spending valuable gold on equipment when none of the choices satisfy you, craft trinkets at Hearthroots for free and prioritize building a posse of mercenaries. Petting mounts in each region results in one waiting for you in a new Haven – upgrade their damage and available time for smoother sailing. Of course, you’ll also gain a separate resource that can be spent to upgrade each augment, which allows different elements to synergize with each other. Enable chain lightning to burn enemies, then increase fire damage and burn damage for each enemy affected. The interplay between all these allows for some truly broken builds, but they also encourage exploration. After all, you can’t take advantage of these elemental possibilities without discovering their respective crystals in the wild and reclaiming them in the name of Uchawi.

None of this would matter if the overall combat didn’t feel good, as if there was a possibility of that, given the developers’ pedigree. But everything – the impact of blows, both given and received; the throws and collateral damage when enemies are knocked together; and the sheer power of Specials – feels fantastic. It can take some practice to differentiate between blows that should be dodged, parried or outright jumped over, and reacting accordingly.

"I didn’t expect to enjoy Absolum as much as I did… As a fusion of incredible beat ’em up action and deceptively simple build-crafting, it delivers an enjoyable experience with immaculate pacing, bolstered even more by a fantastic presentation."

However, standing toe to toe with a boss, punishing their mistakes, and breaking their guard to unleash a world of hurt feels so satisfying. Enemy variety is also on point, whether it’s a ghost that disappears and re-materializes into an unblockable attack or reptilian heavies that block most blows before unleashing counterattacks. That’s not even getting into the boss battles, which also feel unique, challenging and downright enjoyable in their own ways.

And while it’s been said already, it bears repeating – Absolum looks absolutely amazing. The animation work alone is just vibrant and stylish, matching the art direction and environmental design in almost every facet. The soundtrack is similarly incredible, thanks to the likes of Gareth Coker (Ori), Motoi Sakuraba (Dark Souls), and Yuka Kitamura (Sekiro), alongside Gordon, with tunes ranging from heavy metal and orchestral rock to epic symphonies and vocals that would feel right at home in a FromSoftware game.

I didn’t expect to enjoy Absolum as much as I did, though some part of me craves more, whether it’s additional systems to further mix up each run or more in-depth narrative arcs for the core cast. Nevertheless, as a fusion of incredible beat ’em up action and deceptively simple build-crafting, it delivers an enjoyable experience with immaculate pacing, bolstered even more by a fantastic presentation.

Developed alongside Guard Crush Games with animation and production studio Supamonks also involved, the rogue-lite fantasy beat ’em up is available later today for PS4, PS5, PC, and Nintendo Switch.

In the meantime, a launch trailer is available, highlighting the main playable characters and insane action that they’ll get up to. As members of a resistance against Azra, the Sun King, players must traverse the world of Talamh to defeat him. Each has unique abilities and playstyles, from Galandra’s well-balanced playstyle to Brome’s magic attacks and staff surfing.

Traversing new locations unlocks Rituals, which can provide powerful passive elemental buffs or change up a character’s attacks entirely. Of course, there’s also local and online co-op, allowing two players to team up and wreak havoc. Stay tuned for more details when Absolum launches later today and check out the free demo in the meantime.
