Todd Howard knows you'll buy the eventual smartwatch port.

One of the most memorable parts of Bethesda’s E3 2018 conference was when they showed off Skyrim: Very Special Alexa Edition. The gag featured Skyrim on the smart assistant and was a funny interlude with the publisher poking fun at itself for releasing so many versions of their landmark RPG. Until later it turned out that we got played.

While Bethesda could poke fun at itself by joking about and then releasing a version of Skyrim that could literally be played on a smart toilet, they’re not just porting the game to toasters for no reason. There’s demand, according to Todd Howard in a Gamelab appearance (transcribed by Venturebeat). Millions of players each month still play the title in some form. “That’s why we keep releasing it,” Howard said. “If you want us to stop releasing it, stop buying it.”

Howard did step back to elaborate that the player base so long after the original launch has a lot to do with publishers making it easier to replay older classic titles, saying it’s “great for the industry,”. If you somehow haven’t played The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim yet, you can catch the RPG epic on the PC in two different flavours, on PS3, Xbox 360, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and anything with Alexa, such as literal thermostats.

Making Skyrim VR even more immersive with improved graphics.

Skyrim, which is at this point available on everything, including Alexa (seriously), is one of the few major full fledged games that has been made available for the burgeoning VR market too. Skyrim VR launched for PlayStation VR late last year, and then was also made available to other VR headsets earlier this year.

Now, it has received an update- its very first one since January- that should make the PlayStation VR version in particular more enjoyable. Update 1.4.40.0.8 (I don’t know why it’s numbered that way either, stop asking me) improves the graphics of Skyrim VR, especially on PS4 Pro, adds more movement, control, and immersion options if you are playing with PlayStation Move controllers, and adds a new main menu experience. You can check out the full patch notes below, if you are interested.

If you haven’t played it already, The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim is available now on PC, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, PS4, PSVR, Nintendo Switch, Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, and, yes, Alexa. I’m sure you can find something to play it on and see what all the fuss is about.

Skyrim PSVR Update Version 1.4.40.0.8 – Patch Notes

Has Bethesda gone too far? Spoiler: Yes.

Bethesda’s Todd Howard had a little bit during the company’s E3 presser about Skyrim’s Very Special Edition which would be coming to numerous platforms like Amazon Alexa. While it won’t be heading to Pager, Samsung Smart Refrigerator or Etch-a-Sketch, it actually available for Alexa.

According to the official product page, this version allows for voice usage to explore Skyrim. This includes questing, mastering different weapons, fatally harming mudcrabs, dying and whatnot. It’s bizarre and you might still think this is a joke gone too far (especially judging by the reviews).

Once again, it is real. Check out PC Gamer trying out the Alexa version here. It’s as bizarre as it sounds but might be worth trying out if you really, really like hearing Alexa talk.

Bethesda had numerous announcements to make during its E3 presser including Starfield and The Elder Scrolls 6 coming to next generation consoles, footage and details for Fallout 76 (which is out in November) and much more.
