PlayStation UK boss Fergal Gara, who resigned from Sony in September, has joined Amazon UK as director of PC. This was revealed by MCV though it’s unclear what Gara’s role entails for Amazon UK.

Gara played an instrumental role as PlayStation UK boss, handling marketing, finance, sales and other roles. Having joined in September 2011, Gara was in charge of both UK and Ireland business for PlayStation and helped the brand reach third place in terms of console market share. The PS4’s release saw the console become the top selling gaming console in the UK.

Gara’s role as PlayStation UK boss was subsequently taken up by Warwick Light, who served as general manager of PlayStation for Eastern Europe and the Nordics. We’ll find out what Amazon UK and Gara have in store for the future so stay tuned for more details and let us know what you think in the comments.

Pick up the white or black version of the console at a discount.

If you haven’t received a PlayStation 4 for Christmas, then you should direct your attention to Amazon UK which is selling new PS4 consoles – in white and black – for only £280.

This is £50 less than what you’ll find at GAME UK and £30 less than John Lewis which are selling the PS4 for £330 and £310 respectively. Oddly enough, despite the bundle deal having expired for the same, some users reporting that a digital copy of DriveClub can also be picked up with each system. Remember to inquire for more information on that before making a purchase.

Those interested in walk-in retailers can head to Argos which is selling the console’s black version for £280 as well. You can also have this delivered to your house by paying £4 extra.

Act fast though because these deals won’t last long now that the Christmas and New Year’s celebration periods are over.

We’ve already seen placeholder prices for Microsoft’s Xbox One shot straight up to $899 on EB Games Australia, with controllers priced at $99. Could the prices for games – even if they are just placeholders – be any worse? Yes they can, judging from what a Reddit user just found.

On Amazon.UK, Xbox One games are currently up for pre-order. The two titles showcased most prominently after the console itself are FIFA 14 and Call of Duty: Ghosts, which go for a not-so cool £89.99. That’s $136 USD per game. Seriously.

But remember, these are placeholder prices. It could be possible that games end up costing £60 instead. Regardless, that’s still more than $90 USD for a single Xbox One title. And we honestly doubt that they’ll be priced the same games are currently (the Xbox 360 version of Ghosts, for instance, is available for £40 on pre-order).

What are your thoughts? Is the sky falling for Microsoft’s next gen console before it’s even released, or is it all just over-exaggeration?

Whilst such an early release date seems unlikely, it raises some very interesting questions:

14 July is both very soon, but also very specific, suggesting that this isn’t simply a ‘placeholder’ date.

This date is also a Saturday, a very unlikely release day for hardware in the UK.

Amazon’s pre-order price guarantee means that the £199.99 price-tag will be honoured by Amazon and anybody who pre-orders now won’t pay a penny more than £199.99.

If this is the genuine retail price, it means the Wii U’s launch price is around £20 less than the 3DS.

This also suggests a drastic change of release strategy, more similar to Apple’s ‘oh, it’s out next week’ approach.

Earlier this week another UK-based retailer ShopTo.net listed the Wii U for £279.99 without specifying a release date.
