Amplitude's 4X builds on the first title's incredible lore and random events with several refinements and new mechanics.

The true majesty of the 4X strategy genre only became apparent with Amplitude Studios’ Endless Legend. It packed incredible lore surrounding the Endless, a uniquely fun scenario (Auriga in the midst of destruction) and offered several fun ways to play courtesy of its myriad factions.

However, as the studio ventured more into supporting Endless Space 2 and delivering Endless Dungeon, my dreams of a proper sequel, one that built on the wonderful mix of fantasy civilization-building and sci-fi weirdness, felt like a distant dream. Even with the official announcement of Endless Legend 2, I was skeptical whether it contained the magic that drew me to it in the first place. Good news, though – it does, and even in early access, there’s the potential to dwarf Amplitude’s previous efforts.

Auriga, wherever you may be, rest in peace. This time, players explore the lands – but not quite the waters – of Saiadha. Something strange is occurring, and even stranger things stir beneath the surface, acting now to fulfill whatever grand plan they may have. But your origins don’t immediately intersect with them. There are five factions to choose from initially, with a sixth coming at some point during early access: the Kin of Sheredyn, the Last Lords (based on Broken Lords from the first game), the Aspects, the Tahuks and, perhaps my favorite, the Necrophage. Each of these caters to a specific style of play – the Kin are more suited for fortifying one’s city, the Necrophage favor conquest, and so on.

But the distinctions run much deeper. The Necrophage, for example, have risen to the surface, no longer keen on remaining in the shadows. The High Matriarch, She-Who-Sustains-Us, remains in the background while Prime, One-Who-Stalks-Afar, leads the charge to consume all of Saiadha. While this may lend to a more mindless approach, I found the Prime to be somewhat amenable to dealing with outside individuals. So when an Ancient Ametrine called Pyrite suddenly emerged, offering to teach the old ways of war, a path to unlock a notable +2 exploited Resource Production on Mines opened up. Then again, interrogating it for other bonuses to the Swarm was another option.

Diplomacy is also something that the Necrophage can become adept in. Maybe it was because the Tahuks were devious, had an escape plan or didn’t fear us, but we went from Shared Research to a Non-Aggression Pact and Cartography Exchange – which revealed more details on other factions – in short order. And it didn’t even cost much by way of Dust.

Of course, it’s not long before the Necrophage’s true calling emerges, sometimes quite literally. With only one city to call their own, the goal is to slay their enemies, create Larva to proliferate their forces, and generate corpses to specialize them further. They’re also very good at getting around thanks to Burrows, so it becomes as easy to strike a wayward faction and escape as it does to instantly funnel an excess amount of forces across land masses to raze their cities to the ground.

That’s only one part that makes Endless Legend 2 so endearing. The usual 4X gameplay loop is in place and quite robust – upon establishing a city, you build districts to exploit the strategic resources on each tile, earning Dust (the universal currency), Science (for researching new tech), Industry (for construction, city improvements, and whatnot), and Food (for expanding one’s population). There’s also Influence, used for foundations to build further districts on and Luxury Resources, which facilitate more specialized uses. As you progress, options to convert resources, enhance your city, and more will become available. Districts develop further as they’re surrounded by other districts, and the Nest grows, much to the horror of everyone else.

However, you’re not restricted to simply expansion and city management, like deciding where to allocate population members to exploit resources and eventually appointing a City Council (and yes, the humor of these warmongering bug-like beings occupying important stately seats doesn’t escape me). Exploration and uncovering more of the map, whether it’s discovering minor factions who could provide further benefits upon completing their quests or delicious fresh corpses if you prefer decimation, is key. Discoveries offer small boosts to your resources, progressing you even further through the tech tree and towards a new year with new technologies. Whether that means exploring new agricultural developments or unlocking even more devastating units is up to you.

If that weren’t enough, Saiadha’s changing nature must be taken into account. It all begins with the Monsoons, which obstruct the tile visibility range, making it more difficult to keep track of threats (which works both ways, meaning some cheeky Burrow exploitation), but also results in more plentiful resources for a limited time. Then there’s the Tidefall. Sea levels recede and new areas become available. Some points of interest could host dangerous new threats but provide worthwhile rewards. There’s also the fact that the various major factions are no longer separated by water, making it that much easier to venture forth and wage war.

It’s an intriguing mechanic that opens up the mid-game. While you need to prepare accordingly – and also manage any further changes in weather with some degree of forecast – the Tidefall keeps things interesting and fresh.

One of the biggest criticisms surrounding the original Endless Legend was the combat. It just didn’t feel as snappy or intuitive as one would have liked. Endless Legend 2 streamlines things significantly, opting for more rudimentary turns, but the overall speed and responsiveness feel great. Using terrain, be it high ground or forests, and designating specific squads depending on the hero’s specialty becomes important.

This pseudo-RPG approach of slowly building up a squad, specializing my units into Necrodrones to fly over obstacles unimpeded or Spitters for ranged damage, and then specializing those even further (at the cost of extensive corpses and Dust) adds a welcome layer of strategy and planning. You can also denote another hero as a friend, thus granting more damage when they fight together. And as always, there’s a rush to discovering new equipment and receiving a nice little power spike – or realizing that it doesn’t work for your hero and cursing accordingly.

All of this only scratches the surface of what Endless Legend 2 has to offer, but there are definitely some areas which could be improved upon further. The UI when managing cities and building districts could be a little sleeker and less crowded, though you can zoom out extensively for a much better view. Sometimes, my units would attack enemies while swapping to a different tile – not exactly the best tactic when I’m trying to maximize a terrain’s benefits. I like the aesthetic, but it feels like there’s more room for the presentation to grow in the environmental detail and dialogue.

These are minor quibbles, at least for now. At its core, Endless Legend 2 not only satisfies that itch for one more turn but also for proper set-up and preparation for what future turns could hold. It’s incrementally fulfilling and continually escalates throughout thanks to the Tidefall. Here’s hoping Amplitude can supplant it further and deliver a 4X experience that truly surpasses the original.

Amplitude Studios' 4X strategy sequel takes place on a new planet and offers five playable factions with a sixth coming sometime later.

Amplitude Studios’ Endless Legend 2 is now available for PC via Steam Early Access. Arriving about 11 years after the original, the 4X strategy title unfolds on a new planet, Saiadha. Check out the launch trailer below.

Similar to Auriga, Saiadha has its own unstable phenomenon, manifesting as monsoons and the Tidefall, where the sea level drastically falls and uncovers new areas. With no naval units, this also allows for connecting factions across continents, keeping the mid- and late-game interesting.

Endless Legend 2’s early access launches with five factions – the Kin of Sheredyn, the Last Lords, the Tahuk, the Necrophage, and the Aspects, each with unique mechanics and units. You can discover minor factions, recruit heroes, pursue quests, engage in combat with smoother turn-based mechanics, and much more throughout a session.

A sixth faction, multiplayer and custom factions will be added post-launch, but there’s currently no ETA. Stay tuned for more details in the coming months, including on mod support and full Steam Deck support.

Amplitude Studios' upcoming 4X strategy title isn't Steam Deck Verified, and the extent of mod support is still to be decided.

Amplitude Studios’ Endless Legend 2 will enter early access soon, which means an official FAQ outlining what players should know before diving in. The price and post-launch plans will be revealed after it’s actually live, but the developer confirmed that multiplayer won’t be available immediately.

“We want to take more time to work on it and will release it in an update within the coming months.” It also reiterated that there is no naval technology because Saiadha, the new planet, is one where the sea levels constantly drop. Players can venture out and explore new points of interest revealed through these developments and eventually interact with other factions.

As for Steam Deck, Endless Legend 2 runs on the hardware but isn’t “properly verified,” which will require “more work.” There are plans to support gamepads on PC, but again, there’s no ETA. Amplitude is keen on mod support, but it’s yet to outline how extensive that will be.

Fortunately, it will discuss feedback from the recent single-player demo in a new “State of the Game” blog from director Derek Paxton, so stay tuned for updates on that front.

Endless Legend 2 launches on September 22nd for Steam Early Access. It will also be available via Game Pass.

Amplitude Studios is taking additional time to improve onboarding and polish, but will provide a free demo in early August.

Amplitude Studios has announced a delay for the early access launch of Endless Legend 2. Instead of August 7th, it will now arrive on September 22nd.

In a press release, the developer said this was to provide “extra consideration” for player onboarding, improving polish and “player momentum” in the early sections, and “ensuring localization is at a high standard.” It’s also working to improve map generation and balance while implementing other quality-of-life changes.

On the bright side, fans can expect a free demo to launch in early August. The contents, and whether it will feature all the improvements that Amplitude is working on remain to be detailed. As always, stay tuned for more updates.

Endless Legend 2 is coming to PC via Steam Early Access. As a sequel to 2014’s 4X strategy title, you’ll venture to a new world, Saiadha, pursuing multiple paths to victory with different factions. You could command the economy, dominate through military might, and much more. There’s also a new mechanic, Tidefall, which opens up new locations.

Amplitude Studios' follow-up to the acclaimed 4X strategy title will finally become playable on PC, with its content to be revealed.

August 7th marks the day that Amplitude Studios’ Endless Legend 2 enters early access via Steam. You can check out all the tenets of the 4X strategy title, from expanding and improving your civilization to engaging in combat with massive armies, in the latest trailer below.

Endless Legend 2 unfolds on a planet with raging tides, where players can uncover different sections submerged underwater for more rewards (or greater threats). As with the first game, you can select from multiple different actions, each with a unique playstyle. This includes the Necrophage, returning from Endless Legend 1.

The sequel offers numerous improvements to combat, heroes, and much more. While you can seek to learn more about the planet and its mysteries, beating the other factions – whether it’s in trade, diplomacy, or combat – is also a means to victory.

Amplitude Studios hasn’t confirmed how much content Endless Legend 2 will feature in early access, so stay tuned for further details.

Players can select different factions and expand their empires amid a dynamically changing world shaped by "cataclysmic events."

Amplitude Studios’ Endless Legend 2 will kick-start early access on PC starting this Summer. The developer has released a new trailer, highlighting the setting and new features, including changing land masses and dialogue systems. Check it out below.

Like its predecessor, Endless Legend 2 is a 4X strategy game where players select a faction and co-exist (or compete) against others. The world is nearing its end due to “cataclysmic events” and you can decide whether to forge friendships, rule through power or uncover the land’s mysteries.

Each faction has different traits, units and skills, and you can either control them differently in battles or auto-resolve them for faster pacing. Heroes also return, offering unique traits to help your empire and armies. As for the dynamically shifting terrain, it can provide new resources, but beware – some previously isolated factions may gain footholds to your cities.

Amplitude hasn’t confirmed how much content will be available when early access launches, so stay tuned for more details.

The studio is now owned by "some" of its founders and team members. Two "exciting titles" are also "currently in progress."

After eight years of Sega’s ownership, Amplitude Studios has announced it’s going independent once more. A Steam Community post confirmed that “some of” the founders and team members now own the studio. Though it’s separate from Sega, it’s parting on “good terms” and wishes the publisher “the best for all their future projects.”

Founder Romain de Waubert de Genlis stated, “Our studio is backed by strong and meaningful franchises, and our team is committed to creating the best games possible. With our extensive experience in strategy game development and two exciting titles currently in progress, we are confident in our ability to deliver outstanding experience to players.

“This decision allows us to be more agile in our approach while continuing to shape the vision that has been ours from the very beginning, empowering us to push boundaries and be closer than ever to our community.”

As for what’s next, the studio’s 4X strategy title, Humankind, is receiving a new patch, with more details coming next week. It will also discuss the future at its annual Amplified event in January 2025. Time will tell if there’s any news for the Endless franchise beyond further updates for Endless Dungeon.

A similar situation occurred earlier this year when Company of Heroes and Warhammer: Dawn of War developer Relic Entertainment split from Sega (leading to layoffs). Both efforts, alongside the cancellation of Creative Assembly’s HYENAS, are part of a restructuring of its European studios. It remains to be seen if Amplitude will fundamentally change after becoming independent, so stay tuned.

Bunker will make a sound when taking damage during her Ultimate, a bug that made Bug Momma immortal is also fixed, and much more.

After the big “On the Rocks” update, which buffed turrets and nerfed heroes, Amplitude Studios’ Endless Dungeon has received a new hotfix. It makes some nice changes like the Merchant always offering five items to offset previous cases where he sold less.

There are also improvements, like quest information in the hero selection screen and a shortcut to the album from the Workshop. The credits have also been updated, and Bunker makes a sound when taking damage during her Ultimate (which is important, given her role in tanking).

An assortment of bug fixes is also live, like a crash that could occur when upgrading the Crystal for a sixth time in Cartie’s questline or a soft lock after loading a save, which resulted in an immortal Bug Momma. Check out the full hotfix notes below.

Endless Dungeon is available for Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, PS5 and PC, with the Nintendo Switch version yet to be dated. Check out our review here.

The roguelike twin-stick shooter is playable for Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, PS5 and PC. The Nintendo Switch version is still undated.

After releasing early for Last Wish Edition owners, Amplitude Studios’ roguelike twin-stick shooter Endless Dungeon is now available worldwide. It’s playable on Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, PS5 and PC, with the Nintendo Switch version coming later. Check out the release trailer.

Set in a treacherous space station, Endless Dungeon sees its unwilling occupants venturing through several floors of danger to reach the Core. Like Dungeon of the Endless, you must escort the Crystal Bot and protect it from enemies like Bots, Bugs, Blobs and Blurs (not necessarily in that order). You can construct turrets to grant an advantage and invest resources to level up your heroes.

Upon returning to the Saloon, you can use Scrap and Cores earned from each run to unlock new passives, upgrade weapons and much more. Solo play with AI teammates is possible, but there’s also support for up to three players in co-op. Check out our review of Endless Dungeon for more details on what makes it so enjoyable despite not pushing too many boundaries.
